明音(LumiVoice)：呼吁博茨瓦纳停止杀戮大象 | 绿会国际分享

编者按：前些年，博茨瓦纳在前任总统的领导下对偷猎者采取零容忍态度，在大象保护上取得了举世瞩目的成果，被认为是大象天堂的保护最好的国家。但是新总统马西西上台后，风向巨变，给该国境内的大象、旅游业以及该国的声誉带来了严重影响。（参见：博茨瓦纳总统拿大象腿凳当礼物送人！"2019大象峰会"新动态令人担忧》）

这种180°大转弯，让全世界遗憾之余，也为全球面临的生物多样性急剧丧失的严峻挑战更感担忧。2018年3月，中国绿发会代表曾奔赴博茨瓦纳，在“巨人俱乐部”峰会上介绍了中国在反盗猎上的不遗余力，来终结针对大象和其他濒危物种的犯罪行为。绿会代表还介绍了绿会作为一个中国社会组织，对大象种群的保护、关注与宣传抵制非法象牙贸易的努力，确保“象牙禁令”在国内得到切实贯彻，以及从民间角度为推行“象牙禁令”采取的行动。

近日，绿会小编收到了来自明音（LumiVoice）的一封呼吁信。现将此文翻译发布，于中国绿发会平台分享如下。

呼吁博茨瓦纳停止杀戮大象

With only 415,000 African elephants and 40,000 Asian elephants left in the wild (WWF, 2018), we were appalled to learn that President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana is offering stools made from elephant feet as gifts to leaders of Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia. These countries, along with South Africa, are calling for the ban on ivory sales to be lifted stating that money from the trade can be used for conservation projects (BBC, 2019).

根据2018年世界自然基金会的数据显示，世界上已经只剩下41.5万头野生非洲象和4万头亚洲象。博茨瓦纳总统穆克格韦茨·马西西正在向津巴布韦、赞比亚和纳米比亚领导人提供大象脚制成的凳子作为礼物，这个消息令我们十分震惊。这些国家，连同南非，都呼吁取消象牙销售禁令，并声称从贸易中获得的利润可用于实施保护项目（BBC,2019年）。

"The peculiar gift of elephant-foot stools to visiting leaders was a strong message in support of the trade," the BBC's Alastair Leithead says.

英国广播公司的阿拉斯泰尔·莱西亚德报道称：“将大象脚凳作为一种特殊礼物送给来访的领导人，是一个明显的标志，表明支持这项贸易。”

The elephant population has decreased from 10 million in 1930s, where they roamed freely in the African continents, to just under half a million in 2018. The WWF estimates that approximately 20,000 African elephants are killed each year for their ivory, which is an average of 55 a day.

大象的数量已经从20世纪30年代的1000万头，骤减到了2018年的50万头以下。世界自然基金会估计，每年大约有2万头非洲象因象牙而死亡，平均每天55头。

"More African elephants are now being poached than being born. No one wants to grow up in a world without elephants and the clock is ticking to save them," Cath Lawson, World Wildlife Fund.

Elephants are the key species that disperse more seeds further than any other animal due to their size, appetite and migratory patterns. Research has shown that seeds carried and processed through elephants' stomach acids are softened and germinate at a much faster rate. As elephant numbers decrease, so do the trees. With the loss of tree species, entire ecosystems will be lost affecting first the herbivores like chimpanzees, bats, birds, insects, and many other species that depend on these trees. Trees are also vital for replenishing the air in the earth's ecosystem where we all breathe.

由于它们的体型、胃口和迁徙模式，大象是传播种子最多的重要物种，研究表明，通过大象胃酸运输和加工后的种子会软化，发芽的速度会快得多。随着大象数量的减少，树木也在减少，并且随着树木物种的消失，整个生态系统将会消失，首先影响到食草动物，如黑猩猩、蝙蝠、鸟类、昆虫，以及许多其他依赖这些树木生存的物种。树木对补充我们必不可少的空气也起着至关重要的作用。

Furthermore, the sheer size of the elephant's footprint creates waterholes for entire communities as they dig deep into dry river beds and their manure enrich the lands. The footprint of this 12,000 pound animal is so large and significant, they become microhabitats themselves. As they fill with water, different microinvertebrate species from nine different orders are able to make their homes there (African Journal of Ecology, 2016)
