As the co-organizer of this large-scale new media public welfare campaign “Great Rivers and Great Journey”, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) is very honored and very pleased to work with Xinhuanet to fully demonstrate the outcomes of the governance of the Yangtze River ecological environment. Co-launching the public welfare campaign of “Songs of the Splendid Yangtze River” is also an important demonstration of China’s ecological civilization construction achievement.

After the launching ceremony of the campaign was held in Beijing on November 4th, from November 8th to 9th, team members of the project set off from all over China to gather at the first stop - Golmud, Qinghai Province.

Golmud, also known by various other romanizations, is a county-level city in the Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province, China. It is now the second-largest city in Qinghai and the third largest in the Tibetan Plateau (after Xining and Lhasa). Golmud is a romanization of a Mongolian word meaning "rivers".

Most of Glmud lies in the southern Qaidam Basin and in the foothills of the Kunlun Mountains. A large southern exclave is administered as the "town" of Tanggula, separated from the rest of the county by the western panhandle of the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. The northern part borders Xinjiang to its northeast; the southern exclave borders the Tibetan Autonomous Region to its southwest.

After gathering in Golmud, more than 50 days of tracing activities across the Yangtze River will begin from there. The team will set off at the source of the Yangtze River in Qinghai Province: Tanggula Mountain Town, along the Yangtze River Basin, from the upper reaches of the source, through Qinghai Province, Tibet Autonomous Region, Sichuan Province, Yunnan Province, Chongqing City, Hubei Province, Hunan Province, Jiangxi Province, Anhui Province, and Jiangsu Province, finally arrived in Shanghai, a total of 11 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions along the Yangtze River, the travel route is about 10,000 kilometers, and the estimated time is 53 days.

On the plane from Xining City, Qinghai Province to Golmud, the team members have already felt the vastness of Qinghai Province of the magnificent China. They flew over the rippling Emerald Lake, the majestic Kunlun Mountains, the winding rivers, especially the ingenious Gobi landforms, such as Gobi, wind-eroded hills, Yadan, salt marshes and so on.

What is particularly impressive is that the plane flew over the Luneng Haixi Golmud 50MW molten salt tower solar thermal power generation project 27 kilometers east of Golmud. Luneng Haixi Golmud 50MW Tower Molten Salt CSP Project is a key project of Luneng Haixi Golmud Multi-energy Complementary Demonstration Project. The project covers an area of approximately 6,400 mu and uses tower-type molten salt solar thermal power generation technology. The project builds a new set of concentrating heat collection system (consisting of a 188-meter high heat absorption tower and 4400 heliostats), 1 set of heat storage and steam generation system (12 hours heat storage), 1 set of high temperature and high pressure reheat pure condensing turbine generator system and other auxiliary facilities and 1 110 kV booster station, etc.

This huge tower solar thermal power generation project is standing like a stabilizer in the sea on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau at an altitude of 2,800 meters. The 4400 heliostats emit dazzling light, which can generate continuous and stable power generation for 24 hours. The annual power generation is estimated to be about 1.262.5 billion kWh. Each year, it can save about 401,500 tons of standard coal, reduce smoke and dust emissions by about 5,431.96 tons, effectively reduce coal consumption and reduce air pollution.

Next, the team will head towards the source of the Yangtze River in Tanggula Mountain Town and explore the mysterious source of the Yangtze River together. Stay tuned for more.
