From 21 to 23 June, “Ecological Breeding – Mechanism Analysis and creative utilization of Bitter Rutin Synthesis in Tartary buckwheat quality properties" is a National Key Research and Development Program and a China-Europe International Cooperation Key Program. This program was launched in Xiangtan City, Hunan Province, and International Buckwheat Industry Development Forum was held at the same time. At the invitation of the project initiator and the organizer of the forum, the CBCGDF as a member of the project expert group attended the event and made a keynote speech.

China is the seed gene pool of global buckwheat resources and the country with the richest buckwheat germplasm resources. In terms of geographical distribution, wild buckwheat germplasm resources in China are mainly distributed in China's southwestern region, that are Sichuan, Tibet, Yunnan, Guizhou, and other places. Since the 1980s, Chinese agricultural research scholars began to investigate and collect buckwheat germplasm resources in China. Up to now, the following results have been recognized as the world: there are 27 kinds of buckwheat germplasm resources in China, among which 25 are wild germplasm resources and 2 are cultivar. At present, these two cultivars are the largest cultivated area in China, namely, F. esculentum Moench (also known as common buckwheat) and F. tataricum(L.) Gaertn. (also known as Tartary buckwheat).

Because buckwheat has rich nutritional value and medicinal value, as early as 2500 years ago, there were related records of buckwheat cultivation and utilization in China. After development, buckwheat has been widely used in Chinese people's edible, medical and forage. At the present stage, buckwheat is cultivated from south to north, from east to west. For example, F. esculentum Moench is mainly distributed in the northeast, North China, Shaanxi, Anhui, and other areas, while Tartary buckwheat is mainly distributed in the southwest, northwest, south China and other areas. China had collected more than 2,000 varieties of cultivated buckwheat germplasm materials by 2018 and more than 1,500 germplasm resources were included in the catalog of buckwheat varieties in China.

However, in recent years, China's abundant wild buckwheat resources are facing endangered risks. Because most of the wild buckwheat in the buckwheat germplasm resources are distributed the places of economic backwardness, backward environment, traditional planting methods, and not enough attention, it faces the threat of wild population survival caused by wasteland reclamation and poor management. At the same time, the geographical distribution of some wild buckwheat is quite narrow, such as Fagopyrum crispatifolium J.L. Liu, Fagopyrum Qinghai D.Q. Bai, Fagopyrum hailuogou J. R. ShaoQ. Zhang, etc. The distribution area of single species is only a few dozen square kilometers, so the protection is particularly important.

Ecological Breeding – Mechanism Analysis and creative utilization of Rutin Synthesis in Tartary buckwheat quality properties” project is a key scientific research program in the utilization and research. It is important to research the synthesis mechanism of the rutin in Tartary buckwheat. focusing on the research on the synthesis mechanism of rich rutin substances contained in Tartary buckwheat. In order to strengthen the management of the scientific research program and clarify the tasks and specific objectives of each research group, the project group specially convened the project initiation meeting and the buckwheat development forum.

As a long-term commitment to China biodiversity conservation and green development of the domestic leading foundation, Zhou Jinfeng, secretary-general of CBCGDF was invited as a member of the project group to attend and will work with other experts and concern the National Key Research and Development Program and the China-Europe International Cooperation Key Program of  “Ecological Breeding – Mechanism Analysis and creative utilization of Rutin Synthesis in Tartary buckwheat quality properties” and give a speech about the protection, development and utilization of buckwheat resource.
