[Invitation] Seminar on “The Mainstreaming of Agricultural Biodiversity and ITPGRFA”
2019/7/9 16:12:00 本站

In order to further respond positively to President Xi Jinping’s call for “construction of global ecological civilization, deep participation in global environmental governance, and formation of solutions for world environmental protection and sustainable development", China will enhance its voice and initiative in the formulation of global environmental governance game rules. At 8:30 a.m. on July 10th, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) will once again hold a seminar on “The Mainstreaming of Agricultural Biodiversity and International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA)” in Beijing. A small number of places are now open for interested experts, leaders of organizations and the media to take time out of the busy schedules to attend and express their views.

In the earlier March of this year, the CBCGDF and Beijing Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences (BAAFS) have jointly sponsored the first phase of the “Conservation and Benefit Sharing of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture”. Kent Nnadozie, Secretary-general of the United Nations International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA); Vincent Martin, Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in China and North Korea; and the relevant representatives from Department of Seed Management, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the CBCGDF and BAAFS attended and made important speeches. The conference played an important role in promoting China's deep involvement in global environmental governance.

Compared with the meeting in March, this seminar focuses on the in-depth exchanges, communications, and discussions of the technical puzzles and operational difficulties of China's current accession to ITPGRFA and provides a scientific and objective expert discussion platform for China's accession to ITPGRFA negotiations. It will also explore "how to mainstream agricultural biodiversity" in the context of the upcoming Fifteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD CoP15), as well as the natural-based solutions. This expert seminar will supplement the puzzles of the experts in the negotiation of international agricultural treaties, aiming to help our country gain more initiative and benefits in global environmental governance in the future.

Dr. Rene Castro, Assistant Director-General of the FAO, and Kent Nnadozie, Secretary-General of the ITPGRFA have confirmed their presence at the seminar. Other confirmed participants included experts and scholars from relevant universities and research institutes such as the China Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the China Agricultural University, heads of relevant government departments, and representatives of important stakeholders and international organizations. Interested experts, organization representatives, and media are welcome to register. (The quota is limited, please contact us as soon as possible).
