Most pangolins which are sent to the rescue center would be soon dead, a common occurrence which remains to be solved. On June 5th, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) received a letter from volunteers, mentioning that a Malay pangolin was found by the pool, and local police officers took it back to the police station.
On hearing this news, Sophia, pangolin girl of CBCGDF, made phone calls to confirm the progress. Sophia was informed that the rescued pangolin had been transformed into a superior rescue center as there is no official forestry and wildlife rescue center in the city. The municipal forest police sent the pangolin to the natural resource management authority who transformed the rescued pangolin to wildlife rescue center on June 6th.
It (the pangolin) seems healthy because it would be weak if escaping from a restaurant, a person familiar with the situation told Sophia.
According to the description and the video provided by the villager, the situation is optimistic.
Sophia actively contacted the animal rescue center several times to confirm the update on the rescue. However, the lukewarm response left Sophia in endless waiting. Until the evening of July 3rd, Sophia received a response from the rescue center: the pangolin dead the next day sent to the center.
Sophia is disappointed, "We have made numerous phone calls and contacted numerous departments to ask their support and allow CBCGDF to engage in pangolin rescue and wild release. When we confirm the pangolin was sent to the rescue center, the staff failed to provide us with an update on the rescue. Finally, I was informed that it was dead. According to our experience in pangolin rescue, it should survive."
As a threatened species, the pangolin has been listed in Annex I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). CBCGDF hopes that each pangolin can be treasured and treated with a careful and scientific rescue, thus helping the creature back to nature. To achieve this goal, animal protection agency, social organization, and ordinary people should shoulder the responsibility of protecting endangered wild animals.
