【Position】

Position Title:  Ecologist/Conservation Program Director, China Program

Department:  Asia Program

Reports to:  Director of China Program

Supervision:  Crane Flyway Program Leader, Yangtze and Black-necked Crane Program Leader


【Position Summary】

The International Crane Foundation (ICF) works worldwide to conserve cranes and the ecosystems, watersheds, and flyways on which they depend.  The Beijing Representative Office of ICF was registered and established in 2017 to conserve cranes and wetlands in China, which is home to five threatened crane species. The Ecologist/Conservation Director will provide technical coordination and support to programs, projects and ICF staff and partners in China and potentially in East Asia. These include priority programs in Northeast/East China (Crane Flyways Program), Southern China (Yangtze Program), and Western China (Black-necked Crane Program).  He or she will work with ICF staff based in the USA and  other countries of East Asia to establish and educate best practice in crane conservation and wetland management in China. The Ecologist/Conservation Director is based at ICF’s Representative Office in Beijing and will be required to travel within China and occasionally elsewhere in East Asia and the United States.


【Essential Duties and Responsibilities】

Provide technical advice and support to the China program, including strategic planning, program development and implementation

Monitor the effectiveness and impact of China program and activities on conservation of cranes and wetlands and make recommendations to adjust programs accordingly.

Build a strong network with technical specialists and conservation partners in Beijing and throughout China to achieve species and habitat conservation objectives.

Support the Director of China Program in developing and disseminating technical materials and reports, developing funding proposals and engaging partners.

Develop and support technical capacity building, including training courses and facilitating exchange between US programs, such as USGS and USFWS programs with ICF in China.

Communicate program outcomes and successes to key partners, stakeholders and supporters, including ICF’s headquarters in USA.

Provide supervision to Crane Flyway Program Leader, Yangtze and Black-necked Crane Program Leader.

The Ecologist/Conservation Director will mentor our more junior field researchers in China, advancing their technical skills and capacity to provide important information for the adaptive management of Chinese wetlands


【Performance Expectations】

Demonstrate technical excellence in conservation and management of cranes and wetlands in China and East Asia

Assure that best practices are implemented at key sites in China

Build a strong network of partners and collaborators for successful crane and wetland conservation in China.

Facilitate the use of best practice and latest scientific information to guide organizational decision-making and daily operations. Work with staff to ensure timely, effective communications to ICF members, partners, peers, and donors.

Develop and maintain effective relationships with Chinese government agencies, including regular reporting and work planning, and with peer groups nationally, internationally.

Produce regular technical briefs and materials, articles and related materials targeted at different levels, e.g. communities, general public, scientific community.

Provide timely technical and program support to the Director of China Program  and other staff.


【Qualifications Required】

◆ Master’s Degree in conservation, ecology, wetland management, ornithology or related field, and/or relevant, equivalent experience.

◆ Strong technical skills and demonstrated experience in conservation of biodiversity and wetland management.

◆ Ability to mentor young professionals

Strong Chinese and English written communication skills, including writing routine correspondence and reports in a concise, logical and effective manner.

Effective verbal communication skills in Chinese and English, speaking clearly and persuasively; and listening with care.

Ability to establish project plans, regularly monitor and track progress on work projects, and ensure appropriate communications with project partners, notably from a technical perspective.

Flexibility to work the number and schedule of hours needed to accomplish regular and ad hoc job responsibilities.

Effectively adapt to changes in work environment and duties, processes, and technologies.
