Zhou Jinfeng Talked About Zhuonai Lake Case and New Thought of Desertification Control|CBCGDF Successfully Hosted UNCCD COP14 Side Event (1)

The 14th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP14) was held in India Expo Center, New Delhi, from 2 to 13 September 2019.

 

Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), Chairman of Enterpriser-Photographer Natural Foundation(EPNF), Zou Qian, representative of EPNF Governing Unit and researcher Sun Rui, Tongchuan Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Chairman of Indian TERRE Policy Center and former Director of UNEP / Professor Rajendra Shende, the world's leading climatologist, and Professor Binoda Chandra Sabata, Senior Scientific Officer of the Ministry of Environment of the National Capital Territory Government of Delhi, India, made keynote speeches on good cases of desertification control in China and good stories of biodiversity conservation. They also shared with experts, scholars and young people from India and other countries. Youth representatives and NGOs discuss the current global climate change in the context of desertification crisis, prevention, and control, new ideas, new means and international multilateral cooperation and other important issues.

 

Zhou Jinfeng described the current situation and control of desertification in China for the participants and highlighted the typical cases of desertification control in Zhuonai Lake in which the CBCGDF participated. He introduced and analyzed the topography and landform of Zhuonai Lake basin, satellite data images of sand and dust storms and scientific investigation video, the causes of desertification of Zhuonai Lake, two important scientific investigation in which CBCGDF participated, and the schemes of sand control, including film mulching, airplane seeding, cofferdam water storage and downstream Lake diversion, which could be considered. In addition, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng also shared with the participants and scholars the new technology of "sand becomes soil" - realizing the "soil-conversion" of sand, the environmental public interest lawsuit initiated by CBCGDF on the pollution of Tengger Desert in Inner Mongolia in the protection of desert ecology, and the CBCGDF volunteers who have been on the edge of Tengger Desert for several years as a day. After the meeting, Secretary-General Zhou and Dr. Shende continued to communicate in-depth and reached consensus on future project cooperation. He said that next year will be the 70th anniversary of the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between China and India. He decided to promote the project of comprehensive desertification control and saline-alkali land treatment of biomass pollutants to India and hoped to promote it to become one of the 70 major projects for the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

 

Guests from the UNCCD Youth Forum and Youth for Sustainable Impact/YSI, UNICEF officials, the head of the Ministry of Water Conservancy, Fisheries and Environment of the Republic of Chad, Africa and officials from the Korean Forest Services Department also attended the meeting. The achievements of China in combating desertification and the solutions for comprehensive desertification control and saline-alkali land treatment of biomass pollutants shared in the conference are highly affirmed. It is hoped that in the future, it will establish links and strengthen cooperation with the CBCGDF in youth participation in global environmental governance, water resources protection, and forest protection.
