CBCGDF Participated in Sharing Meeting of Non-governmental Organizations of the Convention on Biological Diversity to push CBD COP15

On the afternoon of May 16th, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) participated in non-governmental organizations sharing meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity held by the Beijing Representative Office of the World Resources Institute (WRI). The objective of this sharing meeting is to learn and share the understanding of NGOs on the Convention on Biological Diversity and to summarize their recommendations on COP15.

 

Alice Hughes, Deputy Secretary-General of the CBCGDF, made a speech on the theme of "Responsible and equitable target setting for the post-2020 conservation and sustainable development agenda". She pointed out that biodiversity faced such a severe situation, in order to achieve the ultimate success of conservation, it must be a simple and operable choice, involving financial mechanisms and shifting responsibilities to the relevant subjects of responsibility; objectives must be realistic, quantifiable, but also need to be implemented and supported mechanisms; voluntary commitment system may help to support the transfer of responsibility and to provide more extensive support for the realization of national goals.

 

The Director of the WWF Environment and Policy Program talked about WWF's main recommendations and proposals for a post-2020 Global biodiversity framework and shared some relevant preparatory meetings prior to CBD COP15.

 

Li Shuo, the Senior Adviser on Global Policy for Greenpeace East Asia, expressed his views on the main issues of biodiversity and made a profound analysis of the problems in the CBD process.

 

Zheng Qi of the Carnegie Climate and Earth Project on Telephone talked about the synergy between climate change and biodiversity. We talked about how to deal with climate change through Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR).

 

Wen Hui, China Project Consultant of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), said that Chinese enterprises should actively participate in international topics, popularize their understanding of sustainable development concept, collect difficulties encountered by multi-stakeholders and enterprises, and advocate sustainable consumption to enable enterprises to participate in the protection of biodiversity.

 

At the meeting, it was mentioned that NGOs need to strengthen the understanding of biodiversity among individuals and enterprises so that the whole society can participate together and mainstream biodiversity issues. NGOs should maintain information exchange and share the good stories of biodiversity conservation in order to share China's contribution in the field of biodiversity. How to deepen the understanding of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Aichi targets, and its design structure, so as to enable countries to monitor and effectively implement, this is also the focus of our attention.
