Chines Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) delegation paid a visit to International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) headquartered in Switzerland and met James Hardcastle of IUCN Green List and other professionals. After the meeting, IUCN Green List delegation expressed a willingness to cooperate with CBCGDF, and James wrote to CBCGDF to express his gratitude and desire for further cooperation. The author is sharing part of the email from James with you.

Many thanks for your help in preparing and delivering our meeting. It was very informative and interesting. We learned so much about policies and practices in Tibet, such as:

1. The many and varied protected areas and their importance for the region, and globally;

2. The urban wetland in the Lhasa municipality;

3. The medical facilities in Lhasa and their connection to nature and green growth;

4. The excellent work of Origin Water company in establishing safe and clean water and waste systems in many areas of Tibet;

5. The promotion of Tibet as the ‘third pole’ of the world and the efforts to connect to international nature conservation efforts.

Just as we have discussed in the meeting, IUCN would be delighted to explore collaboration on the following:

Support to bring IUCN experts and case studies to deliver training for protected area managers, communities living in and near protected areas, and public-private investors in effective protected areas;

Identify and promote one or more candidates for the ‘IUCN Green List’ certification programme in Tibet;

Support better links between tourism, World Heritage (nature and culture) and environment, through IUCN expertise;

Explore public-private partnership between Origin Water and important wetlands in Tibet, and possibly else;

Prepare to help showcase Tibetan success stories in nature conservation at the global events in 2020, especially the CBD COP15 in Kunming, China (late 2020), and the IUCN World Conservation Congress (Marseilles, France, June 2020);

Develop collaboration on water and wetland biodiversity assessment for Tibet, using IUCN global freshwater experts. This could result in a foundational work that helps improve water conservation in the region;

Promote Tibetan species conservation results and establish a grant-based mechanism for IUCN to help support conservation efforts for iconic species in Tibet, such as the Kiang, snow leopard and rare birds.

James said IUCN works closely with partners and members, such as CBCGDF, and would welcome new members. He also introduced the IUCN China office, and Dr. Zhu Chunquan, the director of IUCN China, to CBCGDF. He mentioned that he will be in China in this year and next year, and looks forward to meeting CBCGDF delegation then.
