In October this year, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of the CBCGDF, was invited to attend the Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference: London 2018 (IWT), a UK High-Level Conference, and exchanged views with international representatives on topics such as pangolins and other endangered species that were suffering from illegal trade.

Recently, British environmental lawyer Peter Lunning made a special visit to Dr. Zhou to further discuss how to closely track the illegal trade of wild species across borders.

Peter pointed out that the key to stopping the illegal trade of wild species is to cut off the flow of funds. However, the premise of effectively cutting off the flow of funds is to correctly grasp the direction of the flow, and that will inevitably require a large number of experts to assist. Peter said that now in the international community, a group of professionals are working to stop the flow of funds and demand. By dealing with trade and known information, these professionals will take legal steps to cut off the supply chain.

Dr. Zhou introduced the latest progress of the CBCGDF on pangolin work to the British lawyer and mentioned that genetic sequencing and supply chain tracking will be the main tools to further promote the illegal trade of endangered species such as pangolins in China. Dr. Zhou also said that CBCGDF will self-recommend as the leader of related work and establish a framework with all parties. Under the deployment of the “One Belt, One Road” initiative, Chinese non-governmental organizations (NGOs) should actively “go out” and join the environmental protection and species conservation NGOs along the “Belt and Road” countries to jointly carry out related work, such as Environmental Public Interest Litigation, and jointly strive for the environment of people at home and abroad.
