On the afternoon of November 21st, Sharm El Sheikh, the CBCGDF delegation attended the Fourteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP14) of the 2018 United Nations Biodiversity Conference in Egypt, successfully co-hosted the “Ecological Belt and Road” theme side event. The grand event is unprecedented, and the response is extraordinary. The international experts and colleagues who came to the event cover a wide range of fields and are widely representative.

Including Dr. Kathy Mackinnon, Chairman of the IUCN-WCPA, Mr. Norbert B?rlocher, Head of the Rio Conventions Section of Federal Office for the Environment – FOEN, Switzerland, Dr. Bob Tansey, Senior Adviser of External Affairs & Policy, Northeast Asia and Greater China at The Nature Conservancy, Dr. Harvey Locke, Co-founder and Strategic Advisor, Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative; Member of IUCN-WCPA Connectivity Conservation Specialist Group, Dr. Gilles Seutin, Chief Scientist at Parks Canada, Dr. Scott Perkin, Head of the Natural Resources Group for IUCN Asia, Christian Schwarzer, one of the founders of Global Youth Biodiversity Network, and many other international experts participated in listening to this side event, and many of them shared the subject as well. The most important and very striking thing is that many of the biggies talked about President Xi Jinping and the “Belt and Road Initiative” when they shared the theme, talked about “Ecological Civilization” is a very remarkable thoughts.

As a leading NGO dedicated to environmental protection and sustainable development, focusing on capacity building, research, support, consulting and corporate social responsibility, based on the “Belt and Road” initiative, CBCGDF proposed “Ecological Belt and Road” initiative (EBRs). At the EBRs initiative and CMS (Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals ) Workshop hosted by CBCGDF in 2016, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary General of CBCGDF, interpreted the “Belt and Road” initiative, emphasizing the full integration of ecological civilization and strengthening the ecology. Environmental international cooperation is the thought-leading, booster and entry point of the “Belt and Road” initiative. In the process of advancing the “Belt and Road” initiative, it is necessary to integrate organically with biodiversity conservation, strengthen links and cooperation with international organizations, and work together to build a global ecological civilization. At the workshop, the relevant leaders pointed out that they hope that more public welfare organizations are like CBCGDF, actively participate in the construction of ecological civilization, cooperate with relevant government departments and scientific research units, jointly create a good atmosphere, popularize more knowledge, and drive more people of insight, contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and contribute to the sustainable development of human society.

The theme of the COP14 side event is “Likeminded Megadiverse Countries as Leaders for the Ecological Belt and Road Initiative”. CBCGDF representative Dr. Alice Hughes shared the topic “Likeminded Megadiverse Countries as Role Models for Sustainable Development”. The keynotes shared by other international experts are: “The Role of Early Spatial Planning & Green Infrastructure”, “Connectivity for Development and Trade: Can it be Compatible with Connectivity for Nature?”, and “Environmental Imperatives for Mega-projects-Safeguards for the Environment and Society”. Dr. Zhou shared the theme of “Advancing Biodiversity Conservation Along the Belt & Road”.

All the biggies participated in the subsequent group discussions and live Q&A sessions. The discussion covered:

1)    discuss how overseas infrastructural investments can be made more sustainable and developing standards to ensure good stewardship;
2) identify conservation priorities along the route of the BRI;
3) highlight possible risks in terms of direct and indirect (i.e. materials extraction) risks along the BRI;
4) collate country perspectives and priorities associated with the environmental implications of BAR;
5) discuss how NGOs can be involved in influencing sustainability on the BRI
6) discuss how countries can be collaboratively involved in developing and enforcing sustainabilty initiatives and have shared oversight along the route
7) discuss how the development of standards can be applied for the development of sustainable international investment standards for international infrastructural projects

Important members and experts of the Chinese delegation attending the United Nations Biodiversity Conference also attended the side event. Thanks for their guidance and support, this is an important primary factor for the success of this side event of the CBCGDF delegation. At the same time, the support of experts from all over the world is also very important.
