On November 19th, Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, the CBCGDF delegation attended the Fourteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity of “2018 UN Biodiversity Conference” (CBD COP14) was invited to participate in a side event co-hosted by UN Environment, the National Geographic Society and IUCN themed: Enhancing Progress towards Aichi Target 11: Protected Planet and the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas.

This side event discussed: implementation of the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas in a number of countries, capacity development, financing and investment, and the delivery of Aichi Biodiversity Target 11 on protected areas. Special note was given to the 2018 Protected Planet Report throughout the event. The IUCN Green List is the first global standard of best practice for area-based conservation. As a programme of certification for protected and conserved areas, such as national parks, natural World Heritage sites, community conserved areas and nature reserves, the List recognizes well-managed and well-governed protected and conserved areas, increasing the number of natural areas delivering long-lasting conservation results for people and nature.

CBCGDF is committed to promoting biodiversity conservation and achieving effective and sustainable development of the ecological environment and society through policies and methods. The “CCAfa” (China Conservation Area for something at somewhere) system, which was created by this innovation, has Chinese characteristics and aims to protect biodiversity, natural environment, humanities resources, encourage and support local volunteers, civil society organizations and communities to join, with public participation protection as the core, and share the deeds and experiences of public protection and promote mutual assistance and promotion of protection forces. Practice shows that this innovative system has strong vitality and influence. It has pioneered the promotion of a nationwide system of protected areas by social organizations and has a profound impact on biodiversity conservation. Up to now, CBCGDF has established nearly 103 CCAfa sites in Inner Mongolia, Tangshan City, Tianjin City, Shanghai City, Ningbo City, Tiaozini in Jiangsu Province, Baiyangdian in Xiongan New Area,  Xinjiang and other provinces and autonomous regions, covering the dark and starry sky and ancient trees, cultural relics, deserts and wetlands, endangered plant species Acer pentaphyllum, Przewalski's gazelle, Baiji dolphin, great bustard, pangolin, etc.

During the interactive discussion after the end of the keynote speakers’ presentation, Dr. Zhou presented the following question: “The CCAfa has made up for the lack of national protected areas. Today we have established more than 100 CCAfa areas. There is an excellent story behind every CCAfa area. Will these CCAfa conservation areas be considered in the 'Green List'? (The detailed video is as follows:) The question was raised, and the audience was attracted. The attention of the guests and the organizers was received. The official IISD news platform of the Biodiversity Conference captured Dr. Zhou’s question and reported it in the section of the important side event of the day (see link: http://enb.iisd.org/biodiv/cop14/side-events/19nov.html).

In 2014, IUCN released the Green List of Protected Areas, which included 25 well-managed natural conservation sites around the world. Among them, 6 Chinese protected areas passed the review and successfully entered the Green List. Ma Keping, Secretary-General for CNC-DIVERSITAS, presented on the IUCN Green List in China, noting lessons learned from the China pilot process, which included numerous training workshops for assessment.
