With No Fear for Typhoon Mangkhut, Zhou Jinfeng and ICC Expert and CBCDGF’s Advisor Mr. Shende Arrived in Shenzhen | 2018 International Ozone Layer Protection Day Organized by CBCGDF is Making Headway

Typhoon Mangkhut sweeping the South China Sea has brought huge impact to the locals. Activities on 2018 International Ozone Layer Protection Day organized by CBCGDF were designated to hold in Sep. 16 in PKUSZ and USUTech but now may face difficulties.

With numerous challenges ahead, we have still committed to preparation work. For saving the trip expenditure, our advisor Mr.Shende had to spend 17 hours to come to Shenzhen. The CDCGDF Secretary-General Zhou Jinfeng had also faced many troubles as his flight from Beijing to Shenzhen had been canceled several times for the nasty weather. We have had no idea if “Mangkhut”would be encountered or it would reach other cities, or even “disappear”?  Such being the case, Zhou Jinfeng insisted to continue his trip, and now has safely arrived.

International Ozone Layer Protection Day comes every year in September 16. This year, UNEP designated its theme, which is “jointly commitment to preserving ozone layers for 30 years”. Given that, CDCGFD, together with TERRE Policy Center and Innovative Research Institute of Science and Popularization, Shenzhen (IRISP) planned to hold popular science education activities in PKUSZ and USUTech on September 16, 2017. And we also have invited experts, professors and students to discuss over the trend of climate change and our future orientation.Due to the Typhoon Mangkhut, however, the government has announced to cancel general activities on 16th . As a result, the date of our activities may be changed (CDCGDF will announce in time).

Increasing weather disasters is also caused by climate change. Good things are a long time in coming. After experiencing the typhoon, our activities will be more desirable and arresting.

China’s geopolitical pattern and global strategy are challenged by climate change. Increasing temperature in continental regions is accelerating the occurrence of extreme weather; our society is more likely to be threatened by climate risks. Since the beginning of this year, 23 typhoons in total have been generated in western north pacific and the South China Sea; among others, 10 typhoons have launched the land of China, resulting an excess occurrence of disasters and a grave impact imposed by the climate change.

On September 14, 2018, the ultrastrong typhoon has drawn near our land. With the maximum wind near its center reaching scale of 17 (65 meters/min), the “Mangkhut” may affect 43.3 million population and represent the fiercest storm in history!

By then, CBCGDF advisor Mr. Rajendra Shende will share his opinions with you based on Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and the Paris Agreement.

The CBCGDF Secretary-General Zhou Jinfeng will deliver an address on how to initiate innovation actions to jointly build a community of shared future for mankind on the basis of remaining disagreements on some details of the Paris Agreement.

On 9th September, the conference of AD Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement wrapped up in Bangkok, Thailand. However, many disputes over how to provide financial support to developing countries remained unsolved and left many concerns to UNFCCC COP24 that will convene in Katowice, Poland in December.

To address climate change is first out of China’s objective demand. There is a synergetic effect between carbon reduction and pollution control. At the same time, the Paris Agreement has brought external constraints to China’s green low-carbon transformation. Additionally, it has helped China to explore and initiate its green low-carbon development and energy transformation with valuable resource home and abroad. Taking the opportunity, China’s leading position in addressing climate issue will ensure our socio-economic development, ecological reform and energy security; meanwhile, with interaction within and beyond the country, China will play its important yet unique role in addressing climate issues and will lead other countries in building the community of common destiny of all mankind.

As a leading commonweal organization for ecological conservation, CDCGDF, through all the links of biodiversity and sustainability, applies innovative ideas to push for environment protection and climate change. On climate change and sustainability, CDCGDF has pressed forward with extensive exchange and cooperation guided by “going-global” strategy and ecological civilization, and meanwhile introduced China’s vision and achievements in promoting the Paris Agreement 2015.

We wish our special activities on International Ozone Layer Protection Day a complete success. And we appreciate your attention and support.
