The Establishment of World Environment University (WEU) according to Maurice Strong’s Proposal

Professor C.S. Kiang, the Founding Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences at Peking University, has repeatedly consulted with Maurice Strong’s wife Hanne Marstrand, and Mr. Strong’s friends, including Jeffery Lehman, founding dean of the Peking University School of Transnational Law, suggested that the World Environment University, proposed by Mr. Strong, be established immediately.

Maurice Strong was actively advocating the establishment of WEU during his lifetime and visited many places in the world such as Jeju Island in South Korea for this purpose. At the same time, he also discussed the matter with the Secretary-General of CBCGDF many times. In this connection, Professor C.S. Kiang, after consulting with a few friends of Mr. Strong’s who discussed the matter with him in his lifetime, said that it is time for the SG Dr. Zhou to promote the establishment of the WEU.


Maurice Strong, a world-class environmentalist who was active in the international environmental community for years. Before his death, he was a senior adviser to the President of the World Bank and a member of the Management Committee; He was an honorary professor at Peking University, Tongji University and China Institute of Environmental Management; and honorary chairman of North East Asia Institute for Sustainable Development and Regional Security at Peking University; Deputy Secretary-General for Development Affairs; also sponsor of the Earth Summit. In addition, he also served as director of the Earth Committee Foundation, Chairman of the World Economic Forum Foundation and was the top-class figure in the global environmental protection field. In China, Maurice Strong has done a great deal of assistance in the development and implementation of the Climate Change Convention and the Kyoto Protocol, including the establishment of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), he actively involved in working with Chinese officials and experts to facilitate the establishment of the mechanism.
