Dr. Kent Nnadozie: Update on Progress & Recent Developments of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

On May 23, 2023, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences jointly organized ‘The Third Symposium on Conservation and Benefit Sharing of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture’ in the International Exchange Center of Vegetable Research Institute of Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences.


Dr. Kent Nnadozie, Secretary General of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA), gave a keynote report on the topic of 'The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture: Update on Progress & Recent Developments'. The International Treaty on PGRFA was adopted in 2001, and came into force in June 2004. Its objectives are: conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources and equitable benefit sharing from their use. The Treaty establishes a Multilateral System for Access and Benefit-Sharing to facilitate access between countries for food security.

Over the last two decades, Dr. Kent Nnadozie has worked on legal and policy matters and intergovernmental processes related to agriculture and the environment, including the International Plant Treaty and FAO’s Commission for Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
