In order to further improve the performance of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, further promote the construction of ecological civilization, help implement the Healthy China 2030 Planning Outline, and promote the introduction of national and local tobacco control legislation and related policies, on April 26, 2023,  China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) held in Beijing an expert dialogue on Environmental Protection and Tobacco Control - World Earth Day: Mitigating Tobacco Harm and Reducing Tobacco Demand.

Professer HU Xiao from Nanjing University of Finance and Economics, said: Tobacco consumption will cause some health risks, even death, and it will also bring financial burdens to individuals and our country; at the same time, tobacco also causes environmental costs. For example, in buildings where smoking is allowed, it will accumulate soot, tar, cigarette butts, and wrapping paper that cannot be degraded.

Based on microscopic survey data, in 2016, the economic cost of tobacco use in our country reached 1.4 trillion, equivalent to 1.9% of the GDP of the year, and the tobacco industry contributed 1.1 trillion in tax profits. It can be seen that the economic losses caused by tobacco are actually is more than its tax contribution.
