On May 3, 2023, representatives from China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) were invited to visit Industrielle Werke Basel (IWB), a company based in Basel, Switzerland which focus on both energy and environmental protection. The activity was themed on “biochar technology and circular economy in Basel”.

IWB is a company that supplies energy, water and electricity to the Basel area, and it is also the first climate-friendly energy enterprise in Switzerland. From fossil energy to renewable energy and mobility, IWB produces and sells renewable energy and carbon dioxide neutral energy in the form of electricity, heating and refrigeration, uses them in transportation, and is committed to promoting and developing sustainable life and economic fields with customers and partners.

Biochar technology provides nutrients for plants in the best way, while reducing emissions. Biochar is made from regional biomass, such as wood and green waste. All raw materials are untreated and thoroughly inspected before processing. In the subsequent pyrolysis process, these substances are decomposed under the anaerobic condition of 600 degrees Celsius.

Advantages of biochar:

1.    Store nutrients and water

2.    Loose soil structure

3.    Reduce bad smell and corruption

4.    Reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

Biochar technology is a technology worthy of development and research, and it can effectively combine economic benefits with sustainable development. In the future, CBCGDF will participate more in international cooperation and exchanges, share experience and technology, and contribute to environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.
