CBCDGF Statement for Side Event at BRS COPs 2023 Regarding Chemicals’ Impact on Agricultural Biodiversity
2023/4/27 14:58:00 本站

CBCGDF believes that chemicals have brought many conveniences to human life and greatly increased productivity and food production. However, a growing body of evidence shows that chemicals have negative impacts on biodiversity, human health, and environmental safety.

The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) is committed to global environmental governance, including addressing the impact of chemicals on agricultural biodiversity. CBCGDF’s efforts in this area are centered around active participation in global chemical and environmental governance, promoting awareness through advocacy, and providing services to support scientific decision-making in China.

As an observer organization to the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions, CBCGDF has been actively involved in the conferences of the contracting parties and held side events since 2017. In October 2022, the CBCGDF Chemicals Working Group sent representatives to the first meeting of the UN Environment Programme’s Science Policy Subcommittee on sound management and pollution prevention of chemicals and waste.

CBCGDF has been actively involved in the negotiation of the global plastic pollution treaty since 2020, including participating in the pre-consultation process to establish the world’s first plastic treaty resolution. CBCGDF experts have also joined the Nairobi Group of Friends to Combat Marine Litter and Plastic Pollution, actively engaged in plastic pollution control, and made recommendations regarding plastic pollution prevention and agricultural biodiversity protection in relevant documents during the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2) in 2022. CBCGDF has also submitted 16 recommendations on plastic pollution negotiation to the UN Environment Programme.

CBCGDF advocates for the inclusion of microplastics as a new pollutant in various countries’ drinking water quality monitoring indicators and promotes reducing the amount of disposable packaging waste from takeout food. In addition, CBCGDF has provided scientific advice to support China’s decision-making, such as submitting five modification suggestions in response to the Solid Waste Classification Catalogue (Draft for Comments) in July 2022, proposing that soil biodiversity be included as a primary indicator in the national soil survey, conducting surveys on rural plastic pollution, emphasizing the importance of addressing agricultural waste such as plastic pollution from rice seedling planting, and calling for the consideration of natural solutions in the development of the Agricultural Waste Treatment and Resource Utilization Engineering Project Standard.

In addition, the CBCGDF has established an “EcoSites” system, advocating for Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhoods (BCON). The organization has supported the establishment and licensing of dozens of ecological civilization stations, encouraging ecological agriculture practices. They also advocate for BCON and have launched more than 150 demo cases, using vivid cases to promote biodiversity conservation in agriculture and rural revitalization of China. In addition, they have co-organised 2 seminars on “Mainstreaming Agricultural Biodiversity and International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture” in conjunction with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA).

In conclusion, CBCGDF believes that it is essential to address the impact of chemicals on agricultural biodiversity to ensure sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture. Through active participation in global chemical and environmental governance, advocacy, and scientific advice, CBCGDF is committed to supporting a healthy environment for all.
