CMS Will Hold the First Meeting of the Range States for the Asiatic Wild Ass in June, 2023

The secretariat of the United Nations Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) will hold the First Meeting of the Range States for the Asiatic Wild Ass from June 26 to July 1, 2023. The main objectives of the meeting are to review the current situation and distribution of wild ass in Asia; discuss reintroduction, habitat fragmentation and mitigation measures, wildlife health and transboundary protection; identify major threats and actions that need to be taken; formulate and approve a single species action plan for Asiatic wild ass.

Asiatic wild ass (Equus hemionus) has been included in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as “near threatened”, Appendices I and II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and Appendix II of CMS.

 

The meeting, jointly organized by CMS Secretariat and the International Academy for Nature Conservation (INA) of the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (Bundesamt für Naturschutz, BfN), will be held within the framework of the joint work plan of CMS Secretariat and BfN for 2020-2023. The theme is to develop a Single Species Action Plan for the Conservation of the Asiatic Wild Ass.
