On January 25, 2023, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) held an online meeting on the cooperation of the 2023 International Biodiversity Conference of People (IBCOP). Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of CBCGDF, discussed with Mr. Fred Kumah, Vice Chairman of AWF, on issues such as co-hosting IBCOP 2023, holding the African Biodiversity Parallel Forum and Photo Exhibition, the International Biodiversity Fund of People, and the invitation of important guests.
Dr. Zhou first reviewed the history of exchanges with AWF President Kadu, and pointed out that building a closer China-Africa community of shared future and addressing the common challenges faced by human society, such as the rapid loss of biological diversity, need to strengthen people-to-people exchanges and communication. As responsible developing countries, China and Africa have many exchange needs and cooperation opportunities in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. For decades, AWF has been a leading institution in the field of environmental protection in Africa, and has made great contributions to the conservation of species, natural scenery and indigenous livelihoods throughout the continent. It is hoped that AWF can bring more African experience, cases, best practices and needs of ecological conservation to the international platform of IBCOP and send the voice of Africa for nature to the world.
Mr. Fred Kuma, Vice-President AWF, highly agreed with the concept of "ecological conservation needs to be highly integrated with people's participation and green development" put forward by Dr. Zhou, and pointed out that this is also the work paradigm of AWF. He further introduced the conservation work carried out by AWF and its cooperation with China, expressed his strong interest in participating in IBCOP, and proposed that due to the tight preparation time of the meeting, he hoped to communicate and coordinate the details as soon as possible.
At the end of the meeting, a regular communication mechanism was established for the cooperation and contacts were nominated.
