2022 is a year of hard work and harvest, and 2023 will be a year of innovation and progress. At the turn of the year, with the alternation of the old and new, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) jointly reviewed the highlight work in the field of science popularization in 2022, looked forward to the planning path in 2023. Here is the version shared for mutual encouragement.

In 2022, CBCGDF kept on making efforts closely around the work of science popularization, and made more achievements in science popularization funds and personnel input, contributed to promoting China's biodiversity conservation, green development and ecological civilization construction, and pushing forward China's high-quality development and laying a solid foundation for scientific citizenship.

1. The Construction of Science Popularization System and the Work Assessment

On the basis of the original science popularization system and work assessment mechanism, CBCGDF has further improved the science popularization communication system, successively established or revised and improved a series of regulatory documents - such as the detailed rules for the management and implementation of science popularization work, the system for the editing and withdrawal of CBCGDFs media communication platform, the system for the management of live video broadcasting, the system for the management of ideology work, and the outline for the CBCGDFs publicity work, focused on standardizing public opinion responsing, handling and reporting, and clarified management personnels responsibilities and assessment methods on the science popularization platform again. The science popularization work of CBCGDF in 2022 was carried out smoothly and achieved remarkable results. As of December 1, 2022, more than 3500 original pictures and videos have been released, including a series of excellent science popularization works of a group of domestic and foreign experts and scholars such as academicians and professors, etc. The international journal Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development published a bilingual e-journal every month, with 24 issues (including supplements) in total. More than 200 live events of international and domestic heavyweight conferences were held, reaching 800,000 people directly. By following up the hot issues and current affairs and combining practical cases and solutions, 55 online special lectures of Zhou Jinfeng Talks about Ecological Civilization were launched, with 192 lectures in total and more than 2.2 million people reached. A total of 519 articles were reported by the media, including Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily, Xuexi.cn and other influential media platforms.

2. Science Popularization Brand Activities and Outputs in this Field

(1) Series of Science Popularization Activities on the World Earth Day

The activity of World Earth Day 2022 - One Classroom, hosted by CBCGDF, China Science Communication and Seewo Firefly Project, gathered more than 53 teaching units and 4 schools under the Bureau of Education, and covered 15 provinces, 2 autonomous prefectures, 3 municipalities, 41 prefecture-level cities, 472 schools and teaching units with about 150,000 students.

According to statistics, the theme of Investing in the Earth Togetherlaunched by the CBCGDF, BAIC Group and so on,  had more than 15.583 million readings and 17290 topic discussions on the related micro bolg topics from April 21 to 23. The Tibet Starry Public Welfare Live Broadcast with the theme of Action Illuminates the Earthhave earned 67,000 audiences. This activity also received video blessings from ambassadors in China from many countries.

(2) International Biodiversity Summit at the National Science and Technology Week

On May 22, CBCGDF held the International Biodiversity Summit together with BGI, the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, IUCN and some other organizations. This summit is an important academic activity for domestic and foreign academia as the prelude to welcome the fourth meeting of the working group of CBD in Nairobi and the second phase of CBD COP15. Dozens of well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad conducted academic exchanges on the topic of global biodiversity conservation, watched by about 10,000 people.

(3) "Global Action" Series on the National Science Popularization Day

From September 16 to 17, CBCGDF, together with Wuhan Business University and some other institutions, hosted the 4th International Conference on General Education and Contemporary Development, with dozens of media including Xinhua News Agency, Guangming Net, CRI online, and China News Network reported. The conference invited more than 30 experts and scholars from 14 countries to participate and communicate.

From September 17 to October 4, CBCGDF co-hosted a two-week "Plant Leadership" activity across six countries, which spread the concept of green catering and popularize health knowledge through online live broadcast, and was widely participated by the public.

(4) Release a Series of Science Popularize Videos of "Watch Nature with Lao Mo - to Understand Biodiversity"

In 2022, together with the Lijiang Teachers College Science Popularize Base, CBCGDF launched a series of short videos named "Watch Nature with Lao Mo - to Understand Biodiversity". As of November 22, the series has been updated to 61 episodes, with 22 million viewers. This series of videos was selected as the finalist of the Short Video s of 2022 New Era Teachers' Charm by the Ministry of Education.

(5) Series of Science Popularization Topics in Lop Nur and Surrounding Areas

In July 2022, CBCGDF carried out the third scientific expedition to Lop Nur and its surrounding areas, which produced 5 science popularization articles, 14 investigation logs, 5 online media reports, and 2 papers (one of which was published by Scientific Reports), and the cumulative dissemination on media platforms have reached 5.3487 million people.

(6) Science Popularization and Culture Exhibition on Biodiversity and Insects in the Yellow River Basin

From February 7 to 15, CBCGDF guided the holding of the Science Popularization and Culture Exhibition on Biodiversity and Insects in the Yellow River Basin in Jinan. More than 20,000 insect specimens from different regions such as rainforests, deserts and hills were exhibited, and more than 20,000 people were influenced by the activity.

(7) The 4th China Nature Science Popularization Education Development Summit

From November 7 to 9, CBCGDF and Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology jointly hosted The 4th China Nature Science Popularization Education Development Summit, with more than 23,000 live viewers and more than ten news media including Zhejiang Satellite TV, China Blue TV reported.

(8) The First College Students' Low-carbon and Circular Technology Innovation Competition

From March to August, CBCGDF launched and hosted the First College Students' Low-carbon and Circular Technology Innovation Competition, which was organized by a number of institutions including the Consortium of Resource and Environment Societies of Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology. 904 projects from more than 140 universities in more than 20 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions) across the country participated, with a wide impact.

(9) Holding Numbers of Science Popularization Conferences in Various Forms

Four seminars on judicial science popularization of ecological environment were held, focusing on hot spots such as "Asian Elephants and Anti Wildlife Abuse", "Amendment to the National Park Law and Natural Reserve Regulations", "Draft of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau Ecological Protection Law", and "Wild Animal Conservation Law (Second Officially Discussed Edition of the Revised Draft)". Experts were invited to conduct science popularization on environmental law, with a total of 350,000 online participants. Four online trainings on bird and power grid safety were conducted, with a total of more than 300 participants. 34 group standards were completed and released, and a series of science popularization meetings on standard were held, influencing tens of thousands of people in total.

In combination with the UNFCCC COP27, Ramsar COP14, CITES COP19 and other international conferences, CBCGDF held several side events and carried out a series of reports according to agendas of the conferences, with a cumulative audience of nearly ten million people.

(10) Other Science Popularization Activities

Relying on the Think Tank of Science and Technology Communication and Publishing Research in the New Era, CBCGDF have compiled the College Students' Ecological Civilization Reader, a set of picture books (5 volumes) of the Sustainable Development - Children's Story Book series, and are compiling science popularization picture books for young people with the theme of climate change and science popularization books with the theme of The Realistic Witness of a Great Prediction: Dialogue with Liu Shu and Exploration of Qian Xuesens Sand Industrial Concept.

3. Actively Promoting Science Popularization on Hot Issues

(1) Focusing on key social sentiment, science popularization and education on alien invasive species including Apple Snail, Alligator Gar and Canada Goldenrop has been carried out successively. 46 articles were published, with a total reading amount of about 20 million. CBCGDF has been interviewed by more than 20 news media, such as China News Network, with direct and indirect audiences of nearly 100 million people, which has played a positive role in improving the public's awareness of ecological conservation.

(2) Functioned as environmental judicial science popularization service, CBCGDF carried out environmental judicial science popularization on hot cases such as wildlife shows and Illegal electric shock to earthworms. 26 articles were published, with a total reading amount of nearly 10 million.

(3) Focusing on academic hotspots in the field of biodiversity, CBCGDF carried out science popularization of biodiversity conservation in combination with topics such as the extinction of Chinese paddlefish and the functional extinction of dugongs. 12 articles were published, with a cumulative reading amount of more than 3 million.

4. The Operation of the China Science Communication Account

CBCGDF has published more than 1960 articles on the platform of "China Science Communication", ranking the top ten of the National Academy Associations in terms of the number of publications. The cumulative reading amount exceeded 1.7 million.

5. The Construction of Science Popularization Team

CBCGDF has established a science popularization work mechanism under the overall guidance of the Party branch and the overall responsibility of the Propaganda Department, with the full participation of all departments, the assistance of secondary institutions, and the linkage of citizen scientists.

6. The Construction of Science Popularization Base

CBCGDF recommended Lijiang Teachers College and Wuhan Business University to be selected into the National Science Popularization Education Base, and provided guidance and support for their science popularization activities: Lijiang Teachers College Science Popularization Base held activities such as Express Love to the Earth, Science Popularization Base into Campus, Science Popularization Lectures into Institutions, and Practice Teaching Outdoors in Xiangshan, with a total of 9111 participants. The Science Popularization Base of Wuhan Business University carried out the theme activity of "Feeling Chinese Science and Technology and Exploring Food Mysteries" in Chu Cuisine Museum, the activity of gold medal commentator in the Science Popularization Base, and the summer social practice activity of "Science Popularization Knowledge into Community, Science Popularization Power Spreads Warmth", etc. The cumulative participants has been about 5000.

CBCGDF also promoted Community Conservation Areas, Green Children Bases, Eco-civilization Sites, Green Great Committees and so on to become science popularization education base. As of November, CBCGDF has set up 191 Community Conservation Areas with 9 new ones, 20 Green Children Bases with 4 new ones and 97 Eco-civilization Sites with 53 new ones added.

7. Work Plan for Science Popularization in 2023

(1) CBCGDF will continue to strengthen the study of the ideology of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and thoroughly implement Xi Jinping's thought on ecological civilization into the science popularization and propaganda work.

(2) CBCGDF continued to focus on scientific communication of biodiversity conservation and green development, and further strengthen the connection between scientific research projects and science popularization.

(3) CBCGDF will further strengthen the quantity and quality construction of science popularization bases and expand their functions. Relying on the National Science, Technology Week and Science Popularization Day and other activities, CBCGDF will continue to deepen the meanings of science popularization activities.

(4) CBCGDF will continue to do well in "going out" and "introducing in" scientifically and normatively, and deepen its participation in global environmental governance, spread the voice of China and popularize Chinas practices around major issues such as ecological civilization, climate change, sustainable development and human health.
