Details

We’re to host a side event themed on “Restoring Wetlands while Advancing Sustainable Livelihoods via Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood”, aiming to tell good stories of China in wetlands restoration, to positively impact more people for immediate actions, so as to promote the harmony between man and nature, and to build a shared future for all life dependent on wetlands, which echoes the theme of RAMSAR COP14---“Wetlands Actions for People and Nature”.

As an observer to RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands, CBCGDF has been promoting the deep involvement of Chinese society in sustainable development of wetland habitats, and has pioneered a new way of thinking to achieve the post-2020 global biodiversity framework - Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON), to balance biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods.

Many bottom-up ecological farming practices, represented by "Eco-civilization Sites” & the “lotus pond” case in Hubei, guided by BCON concept, have a very positive impact on biodiversity conservation, helping to mitigate biodiversity loss and combat climate change, while also promoting health and sustainable livelihoods for farmers and consumers. We have best showcases in successfully practicing BCON in wetlands in Hubei, such as lotus pond.

Our side event, co-chaired by Sara Platto, Secretary-General of CBCGDF BIOLOGY AND SCIENCE ETHICS, an Italian female who has been in China for 14 years, Associate Professor at Jianghan University, and recipient of the "Chinese Government Friendship Award" & Academician Jisong Wu, Director of Academician Workstation, China Xiong’an Corporation, will have lots of keynote speakers including Dr. Musonda Xoliswa Mumba, Executive Secretary of Convention on Wetlands; Elizabeth M. Mrema, Executive Secretary of Convention on Biological Diversity; ZAKRI Abdul Hamid, Founding Chair of IPBES; Dr. G. Melodie Naja, Director of South Florida Natural Resources Center (SFNRC) for Biscayne, Dry Tortugas, and Everglades National Park & Big Cypress National Preserve; Dias Braulio, President of Birdlife International; our BCON expert Mr. Li Zhenwen, Prof. Li Junqing from Beijing Forestry University, Prof. Chen Bin from Beijing Normal University, our CCAfa (Hebei) director Tian Zhiwei, Terry Townshend from Paulson Institute, and Spike Millington, former CEO of EAAFP, Vice-President of The International Crane Foundation; as well as Dr. Alice C Hughes, Assoc Professor at the University of Hong Kong focusing on Southeast Asian conservation science and capacity building across the global Tropics, etc.
