On October 10, 2022, the staff of the International Department of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) received a message from Ms. Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, Executive Secretary-General of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Its a letter to invitation to participate in Workshop on Indicators of the Effectiveness of Protected Areas and Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures.

CBCGDF is an observer of the CBD Convention, and has always made biodiversity conservation a top priority, and actively participates in global environmental governance in the field of biodiversity conservation. CBCGDF will actively prepare to participate in this workshop.

Webinar on Ecological Connectivity – Insights for post-2020 indicators (31 October 2022)

Dear Madam/Sir,

I am pleased to inform Parties and observers of two upcoming webinars related to the Convention’s work on indicators. The importance of monitoring the implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework has been well recognized in the negotiations of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI), the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), and the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. SBSTTA recommendation 24/2 includes a draft monitoring framework for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. The monitoring framework was further discussed during the Expert Workshop on the Monitoring Framework for the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework held in Bonn, Germany, in June 2022 (workshop report).

The two webinars aim to complement the outcomes of the Expert Workshop on the Monitoring Framework for the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

Workshop on Indicators of the Effectiveness of Protected Areas and Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures

This workshop is being facilitated by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) and the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, with the aim to further develop and test a global indicator for measuring the effectiveness of protected areas management. The indicator was proposed at SBSTTA 24 as a potential headline indicator for Target 3 of the draft post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

The Management Effectiveness of Protected and Conserved Areas (MEPCA) Indicator has been developed by the JNCC, in partnership with the Marine Management Organisation and with support from DEFRA, taking into account existing methods, such as those developed under OSPAR, including the protected areas management effectiveness (PAME) assessments. Workshop participants will be invited to review the indicator and provide input on metrics, descriptions and global suitability for its further development and refinement.

The workshop will be held twice, via the Microsoft Teams platform, to accommodate different time zones. It will be held in English. I am pleased to encourage you to join one of the following workshop sessions:

Session 1 - 10 October 2022: 15:00 - 18:00 BST / 10:00 -13:00 EDT

Session 2 - 11 October 2022: 07:00 - 10:00 BST / 2:00 - 5:00 EDT

Webinar on Ecological Connectivity – Insights for Post-2020 Indicators

This webinar is being jointly convened by the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Programme (UNEP-WCMC), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).

The webinar aims to achieve the following outcomes:

·To build understanding of the conceptual issues in defining and measuring connectivity in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and in national policy processes;

·To improve awareness of current baseline, and progress for maintaining, enhancing and restoring ecological connectivity in relation to the post-2020 global biodiversity framework;

·To share information about the proposed indicators that are already suggested for inclusion in the draft monitoring framework, additional connectivity indicators that are currently available and published but not proposed in the draft framework and potential/future indicators that are currently under development.

The webinar will be held on 31 October 2022 from 09:30 to 11:00 EDT / 13:30 to 15:00 GMT via

the Zoom platform. It will be held in English. I am pleased to invite you to register for the webinar as soon as possible. The agenda and relevant materials will be shared with all registered  participants in advance of the webinar.
