On September 22, the International Department of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) participated in Digital Sequence Information Scientific Network (DSI) webinar, in which the experts concluded on the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Conference on an international legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction ( BBNJ IGC5).

The BBNJ IGC5, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from August 15-26, 2022, aimed to develop a legally binding international instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction as soon as possible. In the webinar, Marcel Jasper, who participated in BBNJ IGC5, gave a presentation on DSI in the BBNJ Treaty.


Marcel Jasper concluded that BBNJ IGC5 addresses the evolution of the definition of marine genetic resources, DSI and MGR not separated & retroactivity, Availability in Databases, Benefit Sharing and Monitoring.

 

DSI will apply to hold a side event during the second phase of the CBD COP15, CBCGDF has confirmed to be a co-organizer.
