He said: “As a Maldivian, the ocean is in my blood. Not only has it been throughout my life, the ocean is also a vital part of life on this planet. The ocean connects all of us and we cannot live on this planet without it. This Ocean Conference is an opportunity that we must seize to take concrete action to meet our commitment to saving lives, saving the ocean, and protecting it from man-made threats and other threats.”

He mentioned some of the recent work that the United Nations have been contributing to, such as the ongoing agreement on ending plastic pollution, the new WTO agreement on fisheries subsidies, and an agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction.

He also mentioned the active contribution of women in the field of marine conservation, which impressed him a lot and gave him a lot of inspiration. He hopes for more female scientists in the field of marine conservation and in normal science.

He said: We want to take full advantage of the passion and enthusiasm of young people. we need your ideas and your creativity more than ever. Oceans conferences can also strengthen the links between our work, such as biodiversity, land degradation and drylands etc, where what happens in these areas has a direct impact on the ocean and vice versa.

He appreciated the theme chosen for the Ocean Conference. He said we must not shorten the ambition, we must not be shortsighted, we must invest, we must rely on science to act, we must protect the ocean, we must harness the power of the ocean, appreciate its beauty and ensure that it will live long and healthy.
