As a senior diplomat, Mr. Patrick Nijs worked in Osaka, Shanghai and Hong Kong as the head of the Belgian diplomatic mission. While Mr. Patrick Nijs was the Belgian Ambassador to China, he chose to retire early and stay in China, his beloved and dynamic land, to serve social groups from all over the world. As a former Director of the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he is good at handling international affairs in a pragmatic way, caring for people and helping them travel safely. Throughout his diplomatic career, Ambassador Patrick Nijs has been a staunch promoter of economics and public diplomacy. Over the course of his career, he has driven public-private partnerships and put them into practice. Ambassador Patrick Nijs loves the idea of fusion. He always wanted to combine his university experience as a social psychologist and later diplomacy to promote interdependence and cooperation in many areas of the international community.

The Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, comes at a critical time as the world is seeking to address many of the deep-rooted problems of our societies laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic and which will require major structural transformations and common shared solutions that are anchored in the SDGs. To mobilize action, the Conference will seek to propel much needed science-based innovative solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action.

During the 2022 UN Ocean Conference, CBCGDF and ACTAsia will co-host a side event themed on "Marine Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development - Promoting SDGs 4, 7, 13, 14 and 15".
