James Desmond’s Speech on Chimpanzee, One Health and Disease Risk

The 2021 Conference on Apes, Biodiversity and Climate was officially held on October 29 at 18:00 Beijing time. More than ten renowned experts from home and abroad participated in this conference to discuss how apes, a key species, can help humans mitigate climate change, value the ecosystem services they provide, and use this as a basis to promote greater concern and conservation for apes in society.

The second session was dedicated to African apes, with 45,301 online participants, and generated a lot of interest among the general public.

The conference was co-chaired by the International Department of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), the RCEP Working Group of CBCGDF, and the Ape Alliance.

In the second part of the conference, African Apes - Bonobos, Chimpanzees and Gorillas in the East and West, Dr. James Desmond delivered a keynote speech.

Dr. James Desmond is a consulting wildlife veterinarian and researcher, working with EcoHealth Alliance as well as many other organizations. He specializes in the intersection between human, animal and environmental health. And he co-founded Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue and Protection alongside his wife.

He mainly talked about the measures and efforts they’ve taken in Chimpanzee conservation under “One Health” concept.
