Sandrine Dixson-Decleve, co-president of the Club of Rome gave the introductory remarks. She said: “Amazing to see that youth from China and other places to participate in this meeting. It shows the importance of getting the word out from the Club of Rome and the intergenerational dialogue that we are trying to read. The objective is to combine ‘top-down’ information on the priorities and latest activities of the Club of Rome with ‘bottom-up’ participative contributions from the members in order to facilitate the implementation of our values and objectives. There really needs to be a better communication with members, so the current work can be clearly explained in different ways.”

The Club of Rome has prioritized five key areas of impact:

1. Climate-Planetary Emergency

Humans are in the midst of a planetary emergency, facing climate, biodiversity and health crises.

2. Rethinking Finance

The global financial system is currently at the service of an outdated economic paradigm. It acts as a means of wealth accumulation for a narrow elite, whilst disregarding the negative externalities of environmental damage and social inequalities.

3. Reframing Economics

The metrics applied to human and planetary progress must change from the outdated linear economic model that promotes GDP growth at all costs.

4. Emerging New Civilization(S)

Conversations are needed to agree on core values that promote human dignity, respect for nature and protection of the commons beyond current generations.

5. Youth & Intergenerational Dialogues

Value the participation of young people, listen to them and really think about solutions.

In 2019, the First Youth Summit 2019 was successfully hosted in South Africa. In 2020, the Second Youth Summit was hosted virtually.

The two Youth Summit showed all youth need a voice. But too many youth-focused programs select the “top 1%” of youth to participate. For youth to take meaningful action, they need to have sustained mentorship and spaces for collaboration. Many spaces seek the “token” youth voice, whereas youth should be seen as valuable contributors.

And then, Maddy introduced the Organizational Structure:

1. Listening Session:

Associates host virtual convenings in their local areas to hear the challenges and the hopes that each young person has in their community, as well as the skills and resources they need to tackle challenges.

2. Data Collection:

All data from listening sessions will collected into a searchable data repository, and a report.

图片

3. Questions asked in Listening Session:

Which of the Sustainable Development Goals is most concerning to you and your community?

What skills have you learned or do you think are necessary as a youth leader?

图片

4. Listening Session Strategy:

Rapidly scaling our associate program.

Implementing open-access listening sessions for any young person’s voice to be heard.

Creating strategic partnerships across the globe.

5. Future of the Program:

Funding-Partnership-Educational Programming

图片

6. Developing Programs:

Online Magazine

Psychological Mastery

Webinar Series

7. Activities with CoR:

Collaboration within the Impact Hubs

Quarterly International Dialogue

8. The aim of Youth Summit 2021:

Invite and engage all current youth members + potential members.

Present formalized plans for the program moving forward.

Engage in intergenerational dialogues with CoR members.

Sandrine concluded the meeting: “Reach out to networks of youth, especially those who are struggling to solve some of the problems. To discuss together what kind of socio-economic development model we should explore for this emerging civilization that will ensure the well-being of all. When we are talking about intergenerational dialogue, we will bring in young people, including those who are not members of club Rome. It is quite an achievement."
