On Aug.29th, 2021, CBCGDF has stated in an article suggesting the COP15 preparing team that the upcoming CBD COP15 could take carbon offset measures to demonstrate willingness of this great conference.

When CBCGDF delegations started registering for IUCN-WCC, they found that IUCN and France have taken carbon offset measures. IUCN and hosting country France will pay for the carbon footprint of the meeting. To be fair, the carbon offset policies is: every participating country should has the same quota—24 euros. Based on WCC carbon footprint per capita (1.58 Teq Co2, also CO2 emission), and the basic cost of each program (15/Teq CO2, also CO2 emission).

By then, CBCGDF has suggested that the CBD COP15 held in October, Kunming, China and the second United Nations Sustainable Transport Conference should learn from the experience and take the same measure. By holding green meetings, practice on SDGs can be suggested.

We are glad to know that on September 11, at the conference on 30-day Countdown to COP 15, and on the latest published article by the official account of Department of Ecology and Environment of Yunnan Province, CBCGDF’s suggestion on carbon offset has been taken by the COP15 committee.

In the news published by Department of Ecology and Environment of Yunnan Province, Mr. Ma Yongfu, director of the COP15 Preparatory leading Group Office and Director of the Department of Ecology and Environment of Yunnan Province stressed that “In addition to specific carbon emission reduction, COP15 will also offset the greenhouse gas generated by this conference through new carbon sink forests or purchasing of carbon quotas.

CBCGDF appreciates COP15 organization committee’s efforts on green meetings and the Green Meeting Index working group from CBCDGF highly appraised it.

The concept of green meeting was proposed by Secretary General Zhou Jinfeng from CBCDGF in June,2019. When Dr. Zhou and then executive secretary Cristiana Pasca Palmer were discussing at the 2019 EAT in Stockholm. Dr.Zhou proposed the idea of green meeting, and elaborating to Cristiana that biodiversity should first be practiced in food, accommodation, and transportation of meetings. Lip service is useless.

Cristiana agreed and made a commitment that the COP15 would be a green meeting.

By now, CBCGDF’s COP15 working group are working positively. We would closely follow up and posts our observations to tell the story of this green meeting.
