On 2 September, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, secretary-general of CBCGDF, Cheng Yiheng, Executive Director of Club of Rome (COR) and Sandrine Dixson-Declève, Co-President of the Club of Rome had a discussion via Zoom about Biodiversity in Our Neighborhood (BCON), Human-based Solution (HbS) and carbon quota.

Here’s summarize of the discussion.

BCON

We have a new name for biodiversity called BCON, which stands for Biodiversity in Our Neighborhood. This is significant, particularly from China's perspective, as the conservation area is extremely limited. We want to protect not only our state-protected areas but also the biodiversity in our neighborhood.

Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON) refers to helping the survival and development of wild animals and plants by reducing the invasion to nature and interference to wild animals and plants as far as possible within the scope of our life when we can’t fully protect nature. The aim of BCON is to explore the best practices of effective biodiversity conservation in areas with intensive human activities, give consideration to conservation and development, and coordinate sustainable livelihoods and biodiversity conservation.

Farmers, for example, prefer using chemicals to kill insecticides. There were a lot of birds nearby when I was a kid. But nowadays, things are different. To safeguard crops, they use insecticides to control and kill birds. They solely employ pesticides to safeguard their fruits or farms in the countryside, rather than using natural methods.

In this situation, we find many examples of keeping agriculture healthy without using chemicals, and we strive to advocate for BCON in the city, the countryside, and not just in state-protected areas. Of course, it is necessary, but there is a certain amount of land available. As a result, we invite everyone to participate. We need everyone to bring biodiversity conservation into the mainstream while also reducing pesticide use—all of the things we should be protected in our daily lives and neighborhoods. We established some farms and villages. In Shanghai, for example, they attempted to plant trees along the coast, but this is incorrect because the coastal area belongs to the water, birds, and nature. We would like to raise public awareness.

Who is our enemy? It is money. Everyone wants to make money and ignores environmental protection. Fortunately, our leaders are committed to enacting policies that promote ecological civilization. Every single day, almost 10 million people visit our social media pages. We can effectively explain our opinions and put an end to the project. We are working hard to increase our impact, and the government has just produced a new document called Forest Result Projects.

More and more people are sharing their ideas and reporting substandard local projects. What we do is assist them in getting it published. Some projects have been successfully terminated, but we still require more people to understand and join us. We've already made some progress, with some farmers beginning to cut pesticide use and boost the use of traditional methods.

Nature is essential to our survival. More people need to understand and practice BCON. Let's give some space for natural life.
