Recently, the former Secretary-General of the UN's Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), John Scanlon was invited to participate in the 2021 World Elephant Day Conference held by the CBCGDF on August 12th.

The 2021 World Elephant Day conference will be held on August 12. The purpose of this conference is to promote international cooperation in elephant protection from the three levels of genes, species, and habitats, and to promote the synergy of protecting biodiversity and responding to climate change.

The theme of the World Elephant Day:from Conflict to Coexistence Event is "From conflict over resources to valuable allies in the fight against climate change: A new understanding of the importance of elephants."  Co-hosted by the Elephant Conservation Initiative and BGI.

The UN’s Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), the UN's Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the UN's Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) are the most influential UN's Convention in the field of global biodiversity. The "2021 World Elephant Day Conference" gathered the current and former secretary-generals of the CBD, CMS, and CITES three international conventions, and will promote global elephant conservation cooperation through dialogue and multi-party participation.

John Scanlon is the former secretary-general of CITES, the current CEO of the Elephant Protection Initiative Foundation, the chairman of the Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime, and the British government’s illegal wildlife trade challenge Chairman of the Fund (UK Government's Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund). In 2019, John was awarded the Order of Australia (AO) for his outstanding service to wildlife protection in international organizations.
