"Lemurs are to Madagascar what pandas are to China. But not all countries are as lucky as China to protect their flagship species."

On the evening of July 22, 2021, the CBCGDF NESS and Re:Wild held an online meeting to discuss the progress of the Madagascar crisis project and future cooperation.

For starters, Re:wild’s Chief Conservation Officer, introduced the causes of Madagascar's biodiversity, as well as the diverse local climate conditions and topography. He took Lemurs as an example to elaborate on the unique biodiversity of Madagascar, hoping the promotion of lemurs can attract everyone's attention. In addition, Russ also talked about the threats to Madagascar's biodiversity, such as deforestation and land erosion, which seriously threaten the survival of local species. The situation is most serious in southern Madagascar, where many species are already on the brink of extinction.

Zhou Jinfeng highly recognized the Russ’s efforts, and pointed out that first-hand information is needed to help Madagascar so that more organizations and individuals in China can understand the most detailed situation in Madagascar. Zhou Jinfeng mentioned that it is very meaningful to awaken public awareness by bird watching, and the Bird Watching Committee of CBCGDF is also holding similar ecological activities.

CBCGDF NESS asked about specific projects and forms of cooperation, contact with local partners, and information required for fundraising, and shared the story of Chinese forest rangers with each other. The forest ranger can not only protect the forest, but also provide the income for the locals to maintain a livelihood. Regarding this issue, the two parties jointly discussed the feasibility of afforestation and recruitment of forest rangers in Madagascar.

At the end of the meeting, the two parties initially reached an agreement to cooperate and discussed the cooperation plan. For example, get in touch with the initiators of the Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership (MBP); organize specific projects in southern Madagascar; translate Russ' Mammal Encyclopedia in Madagascar into Chinese, etc.

Re:wild is a movement to build a world in balance with the wild. They work to protect and restore biodiversity, the primary solution to the triple threat of climate change, extinction, and pandemics.
