On April 28, a symposium on "Coordinate the Work in Reducing Pollution and Carbon Emissions to Create Blue Sky for the Winter Olympics" was organized by Atmospheric Governance and Low-carbon Development Research Center of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF).

According to the Games' organizing committee, Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be held in February 2022, which happens to coincide with the key period of the heating season in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Thus, how to ensure that the heating will meet the standard while the sky remains blue in the above region has become an important issue in urgent need of research and planning. Based on this issue, in-depth exchanges and discussions have been carried out in the symposium.

Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary General of CBCGDF, and Xu Dingming, former Counsellor of the State Council and Director General of Energy Administration of National Development and Reform Commission, delivered speeches at the conference.

The participants in the exchange and discussion are as follows: Hou Li'an, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor of Rocket Force University of Engineering; Zhou Hongchun, researcher of the Development Research Centre of the State Council; Lv Xuedu, chief climate change expert of the Asian Development Bank; Wang Qinbo, vice chairman and Song Zhongkui, secretary-general of the China Energy Conservation Association; Ma yong, deputy Secretary-General of CBCGDF, and He Ping, director of the Atmospheric Governance and Low-Carbon Development Research Center, and representatives from research institutes, organizations, energy conservation and environmental protection enterprises such as the Beijing Winter Olympic Games' organizing committee, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, Xiamen University, Nankai University, Qilu University of Technology, Shandong University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Nanjing Normal University, International Fund for China’s Environment.

The conference was hosted by Xiao Yongchang, Secretary-General of Atmospheric Governance and Low-carbon Development Research Center of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation.

Experts attending the meeting believed that overall, China has scored major achievements in the critical battle of atmospheric pollution prevention and control. However, during this year's Spring Festival and the National People's Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (NPC & CPPCC), severe smog shrouded Beijing, which once again drew people's attention to air quality, especially considering that Beijing Winter Olympics will be held at a time when smog weather appears frequently in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. People from all walks of life are very concerned about whether China can achieve the "Winter Olympics blue" to fulfill its environmental commitment to the world.

Since major air pollutants and carbon dioxide share the same source, if reducing carbon emissions and controlling air pollution can be achieved at the same time, it will better promote the realization of the goal of peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality.

He Ping, director of the Atmospheric Governance and Low-Carbon Development Research Center of CBCGDF, said in a statement that, we will summarize and sort out relevant materials as soon as possible according to the attendees’ opinions and suggestions, and actively report the situation to the competent authorities. We suggest that the governance of "white smoke plume" in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region should be strengthened, with the focus on the emission of industrial water vapor and ammonia, so as to further improve the air quality in the region.

Ma Yongzuo, Deputy Secretary-General of CBCGDF, gave a summary speech, pointing out that the symposium is one of a series of exchange and discussions under the strategy of "peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality" held by the Atmospheric Governance and Low-Carbon Development Research Center of CBCGDF. In the next step, the research center will continue to promote activities, focusing on the key and difficult points of reducing pollution and carbon emissions, and continuously promoting the precise governance of air pollution, so as to promote and safeguard public environmental health.
