This Weekend: CBCGDF Will Convene a Symposium on Poyang Lake Ecological Protection and Water Conservancy Project Construction
2021/1/13 17:07:00 本站

On March 1, 2021, the "Yangtze River Protection Law" will be formally implemented.

Recently, just over one month before the implementation of the “Yangtze River Protection Law”, the Poyang Lake Water Conservancy Project, which has been controversial for 12 years, once again held a technical discussion meeting on the environmental impact special report at the feasibility study stage, aroused widespread concern in society.

In order to focus on this water conservancy project, further extensively solicit opinions from experts in various fields, come up with scientific, ecological, and constructive suggestions that take into account the development of both people's livelihood and economy, and reflect them to relevant ministries and departments and Jiangxi Province, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Research Department will convene a symposium on "Poyang Lake Ecological Protection and Water Conservancy Project Construction" on the morning of January 16, 2021.

This symposium invites interested experts, heads of institutions and the media to participate, and put forward their opinions or suggestions on related issues.

Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China, also the largest wetland in the Yangtze River Basin. Together with Dongting Lake, they are called the kidneys of the Yangtze River. It not only plays the role of sharing the Yangtze River flood peaks, regulating regional climate and ecology, but also the natural habitat and sanctuary of the Yangtze’s aquatic species and wintering site of rare birds. The construction of the Poyang Lake water conservancy project is not just a matter of engineering technology. Its ecological problems have always been an important part of the protection of the Yangtze River, and also an important example of ecological civilization construction and promotion of the coordinated development of ecological protection and economic society. Does the Poyang Lake floodgate (or dam) have to be constructed? And there is still no clear conclusion about how it will affect water regulation, migratory birds’ habitats and food chain, aquatic species migration, regional biosecurity, and water environment quality after its completion. This symposium will focus on public concern, related impacts and solutions and other issues.

The symposium intends to invite 15 to 20 experts and social organizations in the fields of ecology, environmental protection, birds, wetlands, water conservancy, hydrology, and engineering to participate. The meeting adopts a combination of offline and online. Online participation method: Tencent Conference (Meeting Number: 234400486)

The topics of this meeting include:

1. Tracing the origin of the low water level during the dry season in Poyang Lake area.

2. The ecological and livelihood issues Poyang Lake area is currently facing.

3. The impact of building a floodgate on the ecological environment (such as wetlands, birds, aquatic life, etc.) in the Poyang Lake area.

4. Whether it is necessary to build a floodgate to solve the problems in the Poyang Lake area and seek a natural-based solution to the problems in the Poyang Lake area.

In order to practice the concept of sustainable development, this meeting adopts the Green Meeting Index (GMT) national group standard. E.g, Minimize paper printing materials, hold the meetings virtually, and during the meeting, reduce the use of disposable bottled water to reduce resource consumption and carbon footprint, to contribute to China’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
