On December 22, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF),the Malta Institute of Tourism(ITS) and the Strong Universal Network attended the online signing ceremony. Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of CBCGDF, and Mr. Pierre Fenech, President of the ITS, together promoted the “Climate-Friendly Tourism Professional MOOC”. Professor Geoffrey Lipman, the founder of SUNx, Ms. Wang Wei, the representative of ITS in China, Ms. Feng from the International Office of ITS, and Xiao Qing, the Deputy Secretary-General of CBCGDF, attended the signing ceremony.

Months ago, SUNx and the Ministry of Tourism of Malta have signed a memorandum of cooperation, laying the foundation for the promotion of climate-friendly tourism and other related training programs in China.

This CBCGDF cooperation project was born under the background of the threat of global climate change, to play the leading role of responsible tourism in tackling climate issues and learn to explore the various possibilities of tackling the climate change crisis from the perspective of tourism.

The cooperation project signed this time is implemented as the "1+1" model. The students spend their first year to finish online learning about climate-friendly travel and tourism in China (120 credits), then they go to Malta for a paid internship for another year. The core course is jointly developed by the SUNx and ITS, which is the only course provider worldwide. CBCGDF will assist the project implementation and enrollment in China. The academic qualifications obtained by the students are recognized by EU member states and the Ministry of Education of China.

At the signing ceremony, the three parties implemented the basic framework of this cooperation project and jointly promoted the climate-friendly concept. "The world's first climate-friendly travel online course" landed in China and is destined to become a cleaner, greener, and more responsible future "new normal" after the Covid-19.

CBCGDF attaches great importance to the new concept of "climate-friendly tourism" and has launched many domestic and foreign cooperation projects. On March 16, 2020, Secretary-General Dr. Zhou Jinfeng and Dr. Harold Goodwin, the founder of the Responsible Tourism Partnership (RTP), held a conference call on further cooperation, holding events and seminars, etc. to discuss in detail.

Dr. Zhou also mentioned the concept of "responsible tourism" many times. He pointed out that when we promote tourism, its content must meet the requirements of the era of ecological civilization. For example, responsible tourism is about “creating a better living environment for people and creating a better tourism environment for people”. Responsible tourism requires operators, hotel operators, governments, residents, and tourists to take responsibility and take actions to make the tourism industry more sustainable.

At the end of the signing ceremony, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Professor Geoffrey Lipman, and Mr. Fennech also exchanged views on promoting cross-border cooperation in the course and sustainable development projects and discussed more possibilities for cooperation. The three parties will strengthen cooperation in the future and jointly promote the promotion and implementation of the concept of "responsible tourism" worldwide.
