“Science Literacy and Construction of Ecological Civilization” Thematic Forum of the 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy Held in Beijing

On November 18, 2020, the thematic forum “Science Literacy and Construction of Ecological Civilization” of the 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy, organized by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and co-organized by China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), was successfully held in Beijing in parallel offline and online.

 

The theme of the Forum is “Improve the Science Literacy and Promote the Construction of Ecological Civilization”. The special guests it invited included: Dr. Jane Goodall, the primatologist and anthropologist, and a UN Messenger of Peace, Fred Dubee, a Professor at Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) as well as a member of the BGI International Advisory Board / Think Tank, and former Senior Advisor of the United Nations Global Compact, Mr. Kent Nnadozie, the Secretary of United Nations FAO International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA), Dr. Sara Platto, Associate Professor of College of Life Sciences of Jianghan University, Secretary-General of Biological and Scientific Ethics Committee of CBCGDF, as well as a candidates for the 2020 Chinese Government Friendship Award, Mr. Xu Weihua, Researcher of Research Center for Ecological Environment of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mr. Zhang Zuoshuang, Director of the Asian Regional Branch of the International Botanical Garden Association, Director of the Ex-situ Conservation Professional Committee of the Chinese Botany Society, Consultant and former director of Beijing Botanical Garden as well as Vice Chairman of CBCGDF, Mr. Li Qiang, Dean of the School of International Relations, Tianjin Foreign Studies University, Mr. Zhou Hailin, Secretary-General of China Society for Sustainable Development, Ms. Pei Su, Founder & CEO of ACTAsia, Ms. Yang Rui, science teacher at the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China, etc. Dr. Jane Goodall and Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of CBCGDF delivered opening speeches. Linda Wong, Deputy Secretary-General of CBCGDF presided over the meeting.

 

Simultaneous online live broadcast of this forum was also conducted. In the session of the expert forum, the keynote guests shaered and discussed topics such as the new thinking on biodiversity conservation after the COVID-19 pandemic, practice and challenge to improve the science literacy, thoughts on improving citizens' science literacy in the era of ecological civilization, and how to build a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind, etc. The Youth Forum invited outstanding youth representatives from all walks of life who are representative in the field of ecological civilization construction to share and exchange.

 

The guests participating in the forum offline and online also had warm interactions with the audience. As of the end of the forum on the 18th, a total of 78,710 people participated in the forum through live broadcast. Everyone had a full discussion on the current status and problems of the construction of citizens' science literacy, how to integrate it with the construction of ecological civilization, and the status quo of the international community's understanding of ecological civilization.

 

In order to pursue better communication effects, reduce carbon footprint, and increase the participation and influence of the forum, this forum innovatively adopted the form of online live broadcast pre-sessions, with domestic and foreign "experts + first-line practitioners", a number of pre-sessions were held and the entire online live broadcast was realized in late November. In the first pre-session with the theme of "Government + Civil Society + Media" Ecological Protection Mode Sharing held on November 16, a total of 13,322 people participated online. In the second pre-session on November 17, themed "Citizen Scientists and Biodiversity Conservation Mainstreaming", a total of 5159 people participated online.

 

The two pre-sessions invited Professor Fred Dubee, Ms. Guan Shaoxian, a civil eco-environmental conservationist and a CBCGDF volunteer, Dr. Alice Hughes, Associate Professor of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Deputy Secretary-General of CBCGDF, Mr. Zhu Kai, Executive Director of CBCGDF Fish Protection Center (Oppose Electro Fishing Union), Mr. Zhang Xiaolei, the initiator of the E-commerce Platforms Wildlife Free campaign and Mr. Xing Ba , National Geographic Chinese explorer to share and exchange.

 

This thematic forum is one of the thematic forums of the 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy. It focuses on the discussion of science literacy as the foundation of human progress, the root of sustainable development, and the soul of mutual learning among civilizations, as well as the importance in realizing the construction of ecological civilization and building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind. At the same time, it is also a comprehensive science education activity of ecological civilization. As one of the series of outcomes of this forum, a paper solicitation activity was also launched, which will be compiled and published after the forum. Besides, in order to implement the concept of sustainable development, this forum adopted the Green Meeting Index (GMT) national group standard promoted by CBCGDF. To practice the standards of low-carbon behaviors such as reducing paper printing materials, holding online, and reducing the use of disposable bottled drinking water to reduce resource consumption and reduce carbon footprint, to contribute to China's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

 

It is reported that with this thematic forum as a starting point, five thematic forums of the 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy will be held one after another until December 7, to continue to focus on the construction of science literacy in different fields. On December 8, the plenary meeting of the 2020 World Conference on Science Literacy will be held in Beijing.
