The First Remote Sensing Conference on Vegetation Pests and Diseases Was Held Virtually | Zhou Jinfeng Delivered a Keynote on “Ecological Civilization: Biodiversity and Vegetation Diseases and Pests”
2020/9/17 17:34:00 本站

From August 29th to 30th, the first Vegetation Pest and Disease Remote Sensing Conference was successfully held online. Nearly 20,000 people including government leaders, academicians, experts, scholars, colleagues, and business representatives from all walks of life participated in the conference, which aroused strong social response and attention. In order to record the wonderful reports of experts and summarize the results of the conference, for scholars to refer to and understand the content of the conference, Aerospace Information Research Institute, China Academy of Sciences specially produced a collection of this conference.

With the theme of "Remote Sensing for the Protection of Green Plants", the conference aims to promote the interdisciplinary and the integration of production, learning, and research, and promote the theoretical research and innovation of early warning of remote sensing in the field of forest, grassland, farmland and other vegetation ecosystem pest monitoring and early warning, application promotion demonstration and industry development prospects, to discuss the latest research results and future development trends of the early warning mechanism, method, application, system platform and other aspects of the remote sensing monitoring of vegetation pests. The conference was chaired by Huang Wenjiang, a researcher of Aerospace Information Research Institute, China Academy of Sciences and director of Key Laboratory of Digital Earth Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In his speech, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) first affirmed the outstanding contributions and hard work made by Chinese experts and scholars in biodiversity conservation and pest control. He pointed out that pest control not only involves plants, but also animals and microorganisms.

At present, there have been many cases of destroying biodiversity and making the ecological environment worse, which has given us a warning to respect, conform to, and protect nature. Maintaining the balance between species is essential to ensure the safety of the entire ecosystem. Remote sensing technology can monitor the condition of the ecosystem in a timely, rapid and large-scale manner, and comprehensively and scientifically recognize the contribution of biodiversity in the field of pest prevention and control. It is very important for scientific decision-making to ensure food security and ecological security. And it is also an important technical means. The development of the mechanism and application of quantitative remote sensing of pests and diseases provides the possibility for early detection and early control of pests and diseases. A comprehensive and scientific grasp of the prevalence and extent of pests and diseases will promote the protection of biodiversity.

Dr. Zhou believes that the fundamental solution for pest control is ecological protection. The remote sensing of vegetation pests and diseases will better serve China's ecological civilization construction and sustainable social development. Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets. Based on the concept of ecological civilization, Zhou put forward expectations for the current vegetation pest control, and hoped that in the prevention and control of vegetation pests, remote sensing and other emerging technologies can be combined to achieve the coordination and equal emphasis on pest control and biodiversity conservation.

The conference also invited nearly 30 experts from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, State Forestry and Grassland Administration, South China Agricultural University, The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Zhejiang University, China Agricultural University, National Meteorological Center of CMA, Beijing Normal University, Lanzhou University and other institutions and organizations to give wonderful reports. The themes of these reports are around the perception methods of habitat information of vegetation ecosystems, remote sensing monitoring and early warning technologies for diseases and insect pests, remote sensing services for smart vegetation protection, and agriculture and animal husbandry insurance, etc.

The smooth convening of this conference provided a scientific and technological platform for research, teaching, industrial integration and exchange in the field of remote sensing and agriculture, forestry and grass vegetation protection. It is of great significance to promote the academic exchange, achievement display, technology transformation and application promotion of remote sensing of vegetation diseases and insect pests in China.
