CBCGDF Biological and Scientific Ethics Committee (BASE) Held a Working Meeting

On August 26, the Biological and Scientific Committee (BASE) of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) held a working meeting. This is the first physical meeting held offline by BASE since the outbreak of COVID-19. The meeting was hosted by Dr. Sara Platto, Secretary-General of BASE and Chief Wildlife Rescue Expert of CBCGDF. Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of CBCGDF and many other people attended the meeting.

 

Dr. Zhou expressed sincere congratulations to Dr. Platto for being nominated as a candidate for the 2020 Chinese Government Friendship Award. He said that CBCGDF is very pleased to be the recommender for this nomination and to make the public aware of her outstanding contribution to promoting friendship between the peoples of China and Italy. The "Chinese Government Friendship Award" is the highest honor given by the Chinese government to foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions. Dr. Zhou said that CBCGDF is a platform for talent growth and achievement and hopes to provide a stage for outstanding talents and young people to show their contributions and exert leadership. At the same time, CBCGDF will recommend them to relevant departments and the international community in an eclectic manner.

 

The meeting first summarized the work progress of CBCGDF BASE in 2020 since the COVID-19 outbreak, including but not limited to:

 

1. Launched a joint signature petition for the Anti-Animal Cruelty Law, calling for legislation, and gained support for more than one million online signatures in just three days.

 

2. 2. In March 2020, CBCGDF and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) formally signed a MoU to introduce internationally authoritative knowledge and technologies for the prevention and control of zoonotic diseases; in June, jointly with GARC, CBCGDF launched an online capability course "Rabies Education Qualification Certificate Training".

 

3. Summarize the achievements, experiences and lessons of supporting Wuhan City, Hubei Province in fighting the COVID-19 epidemic starting from late January 2020. Among them, CBCGDF carried out internationalist assistance to Italy, helped 16-year-old Italian trapped in Wuhan, and contacted Italian companies to donate masks and other medical supplies to Wuhan.

 

4. Provided recommendations to UNESCO that artificial intelligence ethics should be incorporated into the new consensus on biodiversity and public health safety.

 

5. Research and progress on the wild animal rescue case of Steller sea lion "Little Great".

 

6. During the 2020 National Science and Technology Week, Dr. Platto gave a lecture on popular science for teenagers.

 

7. Co-host the 15th annual meeting of the International Conference on Genomics (ICG-15). The subject is "Omics and Global Health". (https://icg-15.sciconf.cn/en/web/index)

 

8. Participated in IUCN's species conservation planning activities.

 

9. The amendments recommendations to the "List of National Key Protected Wild Plants (Draft for Comment)" have been submitted to the State Forestry and Grassland Administration and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

 

10. Research progress on the cross-species infection and transmission mechanism of major and sudden zoonotic diseases: An upcoming academic study on how biodiversity affects epidemics.

 

11. In the summer of 2020, the national group standard "Standard for Autopsy and Specimen Collection of Small Cetaceans" (T/CGDF 00006-2020) was issued, etc.

 

The meeting also discussed issues such as scientific research progress, academic papers, wildlife rescue, standard formulation, project application, laboratory cooperation, sustainable lifestyle advocacy, and prevention of zoonotic diseases. At the same time, the participants brainstormed on cutting-edge biological and scientific ethics issues such as gene editing and synthetic biology, made arrangements for project declaration matters, and formulated preliminary plans.

 

The meeting also made the following decisions:

 

1. Actively prepare for ICG-15 related forums, and actively invite heavyweight guests to participate.

 

2. Actively prepare for the science popularization, publicity and education activities of the upcoming "World Rabies Day" on September 28 to raise public awareness of zoonotic diseases; Consider joining the CBCGDF Education and Science Communication Working Group to enter the campus and conduct popular science lectures for children.

 

3. Contact multiple related laboratories to promote related cooperation in genetic biodiversity research.

 

4. Advocate sustainable production and lifestyle, reduce the use and consumption of disposable products, and contact manufacturers of foldable and reusable tableware.

 

5. Carry out application work for related projects.

 

6. Actively prepare to participate in CBD COP15 and related events to be held in Kunming, China next year.

 

7. Continue to carry out work related to the review of scientific research ethics.

 

8. Translate and improve the national group standard "Guidelines for Marine Mammal Observation, Rescue, and Release in the Wild" that BASE is drafting, and officially released it in accordance with the process.

 

9. It is planned to hold an online wildlife rescue capacity building training meeting this fall (tentatively scheduled for the working week after the National Day in October).

 

10. Actively prepare for attending meetings and related events at the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2020 to be held in Marseille, France next year.

 

11. Continue to promote non-governmental exchanges and cooperation between China and Europe to promote people-to-people bonds; clarify misunderstandings and let the world better understand the real China.
