Although it is still the period of COVID-19 epidemic prevention, we cannot stop working. On the morning of April 4th, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and relevant personnel from Binhai New Area of Tianjin who came to Beijing for a special visit, made in-depth discussion on how to implement effective protection of Tianjin’s 153 km coastal beach resources in the new development period.

According to relevant personnel of the Binhai New Area, in recent years, Tianjin attaches great importance to the construction of ecological civilization. The municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government put forward the “871” project of ecological environment protection, which is 835 square kilometers of wetland resources, 736 square kilometers of green ecological barrier between two cities and 153 kilometers of coastline. Among them, Binhai New Area takes on important tasks and practices in wetland protection, ecological barrier construction, Bohai Sea governance and coastal beach resource protection, such as the city’s 153 km coastline and 12 sea inlets, which are all concentrated in Binhai New Area.

Dr. Zhou Jinfeng fully affirmed the achievements of ecological civilization construction in Tianjin and the Binhai New Area. He believed that Tianjin has always attached great importance to the construction of ecological civilization, and the local area also has a good foundation for ecological protection. It is one of the most successful areas in the construction of ecological civilization in China. For example, last year, in dealing with the clam digging incident at Baguatan, where the “Community Conservation Area for Relict Gull · Tianjin” is located, Tianjin departments at all levels acted quickly and took effective measures, creating a model of joint protection by the people and the government. At the same time, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng also pointed out in particular, “the illegal fishing and catching along the Tianjin coastline is a new problem in the economic and social development, which needs new solutions. We are very pleased to see Tianjin and Binhai New Area’s positive attitude, courage and rapid action in solving these problems.” Dr. Zhou added that the problems of environmental protection, such as planting trees in the east wetland of Nanhui, the environmental impact assessment of Shenzhen Bay Channel Dredging Project, and the sharp reduction in the number of seabirds in Beidaihe area, are all of the same types of problems, which must be solved by replacing the thinking mode of industrial civilization with the concept of ecological civilization.

Given the protection of the coastline and its tidal flat resources located at 153 km in Binhai New Area, the relevant personnel of CBCGDF and Binhai New Area have made full discussion on the establishment of a fast and mobile coordination and communication mechanism, the strengthening of social forces, especially the supervision of environmental protection volunteers, and the enhancement of the ecological and cultural awareness of cadres at all levels. The two sides reached a preliminary consensus, hoping to cooperate and support each other in the future construction of ecological civilization in the Binhai New Area of Tianjin and make efforts to protect the unique and rich coastal wetland ecology of Tianjin.
