On December 11, Xiao Qing, Deputy Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), met again with Mr. Yukio Hatayama, former Prime Minister of Japan, Chairman of the Institute of East Asian Community and World YUAI Forum, and CBCGDF advisor. The two sides conducted in-depth exchanges on desertification control and the ecological planting of green fruit trees. This is the second time the two have met in three months.

CBCGDF and Japan's YUAI Association jointly established the CBCGDF YUAI Fund, which aims to cooperate in areas such as desert greening and tree planting. Also present at the meeting were the general manager of Inner Mongolia Zhongbei Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge Ecological Industry Technology Co., Ltd., the director of the National Academy of Science and Technology Think Tank of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the secretary-general of YUAI Foundation.

Hatayama said during the meeting that following the World YUAI Association’s afforestation project in China for more than 20 years, he is currently considering working with institutions such as the East Asian Community Institute to promote the program of tree planting and poverty alleviation with China in a new mode.

The YUAI Fund will also actively participate in this project and will support the cultivation of Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge energy forest known as "soft gold" in Alxa, Inner Mongolia. A 100-mu "China-Japan Friendship Garden Demonstration Zone" will be established in advance, and technical research and transfer incubation will be provided in cooperation with a number of scientific research institutions such as the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In March 2018, Yukio Hatoyama visited CBCGDF and had an in-depth exchange with leaders of CBCGDF, such as Hu Deping and Zhou Jinfeng, and discussed topics such as the Belt and Road Initiative, desertification control, and a Community of Shared Future for Mankind.

Hatayama has long maintained a friendly position with China. 2019 is also the 41st anniversary of the conclusion of the China-Japan Peace and Friendship Treaty. The foundation of China-Japan friendship lies in the people. This meeting has played a role in furthering China-Japan friendship and strengthening people-to-people exchanges and cooperation.
