Recently, Ms. Liu, an expert in aquatic products, visited China Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and discussed with Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of CBCGDF on the protection of indigenous fish in Yunnan Province. They discussed how private enterprises can develop in the protection and promote the development of the indigenous fish industry with Yunnan characteristics while fulfilling their social responsibilities.
According to Ms. Liu, there are three types of indigenous fish protection in Yunnan: first, those fish has beautiful appearance and can be used as ornamental fish; second, this type of fish does not look beautiful but grow fast and can be used as commercial development; third, this kind of fish does not look beautiful and grow slowly, but they must be protected in order to maintain ecological balance and biodiversity. There are several major waters in Yunnan Province: Dian Lake in Kunming, Erhai Lake, and Fuxian Lake. It is reported that some units purchase tens of thousands of yuan of fry from enterprises every year to breed and release in Fuxian Lake, but the protection of indigenous fish and the development support of private enterprises are far from enough.
It is understood that the protection and sustainable development of indigenous fish still face many challenges and problems:
1. The sharp decrease of wild indigenous fish resources brings new challenges to the conservation work. There are 527 fish species (207 special fish species) of native freshwater fish recorded in Yunnan Province, including 137 species (93 species) of native fish in Nanpan River and its affiliated lakes. At present, with the continuous change of natural climate and the increasingly serious pollution of the ecological environment, overfishing, and invasion of alien species, there are now 85 rare and endangered species of indigenous fish in Yunnan. Especially in the waters of the main tributaries of Nanpan River and Fuxian Lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in China, much common indigenous fish have been hard to find. As one of the main economic fish species in Fuxian Lake, the production of Kanglang fish (Anabarilius sgrahami) has decreased from nearly 1000 tons per year in the past to less than 10 tons in the present lake. Mao Wan Fishery Company, as the largest indigenous fish conservation, breeding, and development enterprise in the province, wanted to do its best to protect more indigenous fish. However, in recent years, there have been many fishing spots in the Nanpan River Basin, which have failed to catch endangered indigenous fish. Therefore, the current situation of indigenous fish conservation is very serious;
2. Lack of facility support for the construction of wild indigenous fish conservation habitat;
3. It is difficult to train and breed indigenous fish;
4. The industrial development is not comprehensive enough.
Zhou Jinfeng expressed appreciation for the concept of indigenous fish conservation and sustainable development and introduced the China Conservation Area for Indigenous Fish ? Jinsha River and China Conservation Area for Indigenous Fish ? Zigong, and suggested to establish a third China Conservation Area for Indigenous Fish in Fuxian Lake. He also expressed appreciation for the long-term adherence of private enterprises to biodiversity conservation. He hopes that while supporting the development of such enterprises, the sustainable development of enterprises can be realized, so as to better implement corporate social responsibility.
