2019/2/23 20:22:00 本站

During the Spring Festival in 2019, Changxing Island local police uncovers a serious spotted seal burglary case with 100 baby seals being stolen from natural breeding area in the north of Liaodong Gulf. On February 11, after receiving an alarm Changxing Island police found 100 stolen spotted seals in Laohutun, Wafangdian City, 29 of which are found dead. According to the latest report, there are only 71 baby seals left, with another 8 dead.

Spotted seal is on the list of ClassNational Protected Animals, and it is the sole pinniped creature that can breed in China seas. With efforts from government, society and volunteers, the population of spotted seals in Liaodong Gulf remains about 2,000. However, this event has posed a great threat to the breeding of spotted seal, and caused great damage to spotted seal inhabiting Liaodong Gulf. Consequently, on February 15, CBCGDF timely created an “Inquiry Group for Dalian Spotted Seals Larceny Case”, and plans to convene seminar on spotted seals conservation and follow-up of this larcenous event.
