On May 22 of each year, it is the International Biodiversity Day. To actively prepare for the China International Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Forum in 2019, on January 4th, the Forum organizer CBCGDF held a preparatory meeting to organize the deployment of this year’s forum. At the same time, the Forum Secretariat of 2019 was formally established.
The Earth's biological resources are vital to humanity's economic and social development. As a result, there is a growing recognition that biological diversity is a global asset of tremendous value to present and future generations. At the same time, the threat to species and ecosystems has never been so great as it is today. Species extinction caused by human activities continues at an alarming rate. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was inspired by the world community's growing commitment to sustainable development. It represents a dramatic step forward in the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.
Over the years, China has actively fulfilled its obligations under the CBD; it has established the China National Committee for Biodiversity Conservation and coordinated the conservation of biodiversity across the country; it has released and implemented China Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan (2011-2030) and United Nations Decade of Biodiversity China Action Plan.
Based on this background, in order to commemorate the International Biodiversity Day, further enhance the public's awareness of biodiversity conservation, and create a culture of national concern, participation, and support for biodiversity conservation, CBCGDF plans to hold this China International Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Forum on May 22, 2019. The theme of the forum is to protect biodiversity, build ecological civilization and promote green development. The preparatory meeting decided that the forum will adhere to the development concept of innovation, coordination, green, openness and sharing, and strive to promote China's biodiversity conservation and ecological civilization construction and contribute to building a beautiful China. This forum is also a warm-up for the CBD COP15 to be held in China in 2020.
At the preparatory meeting, the Forum Secretariat was formally established, and the corresponding working group came into being. Participants also discussed and deployed the relevant details of the forum, and the preparatory work for the forum was officially launched.
Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of CBCGDF pointed out at the preparatory meeting:“The 2019 forum will be positioned as a global vision, high-profile national forum. At the forum conference, the full collection from the global non-governmental environmental protection organizations including Chinese ones reflects opinions and suggestions on biodiversity conservation and welcome the participation of enterprises and government departments that focus on biodiversity conservation. Let everyone contribute ideas and work together to promote China’s biodiversity conservation and green economy, as well as for the development and preparation for the 2020 COP 15 meeting.” Dr. Zhou hopes that this forum will be an opportunity to launch a new round of biodiversity conservation across the country, prompting the public to create a new round of cognition on biodiversity conservation and form another scale of publicity and education fashion, which lead to another wave of action on biodiversity conservation, contributing to the building of a global ecological civilization.
