CBCGDF’s Questions for the Department of Forestry of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region: For the Rescue of Pangolins, “A World’s Problem” is Always Used as an Excuse, but Why Can Other Countries Successfully Save the Pangolins and Release Them in the Wild?

32 Pangolins Died in Two Months.

The above schedule simply records the fate of the 32 pangolins after arriving at the Guangxi Terrestrial Wildlife Rescue and Epidemic Disease Center. Based on these data, some of the pangolins received by the Center before August 17 were counted. In the 67 days from August 16 to October 22, 2017, a total of 37 pangolins died. How many more pangolins in the Center disappeared at this rate and died?

The Guangxi Terrestrial Wildlife Rescue and Epidemic Disease Center have never released a pangolin in the wild, and the survival rate after the pangolins were rescued was extremely low. Is the Center a heaven or a hell for the pangolins?

The breeding of pangolins is indeed a difficult problem, but the rescue of pangolins is not a worldwide problem. There are too many examples of successful rescues! In foreign countries, the vast majority of pangolins can be saved and successfully released. Nearly there is Vietnam, and many wildlife rescue centers in Africa are also very professional. Their funds and knowledge may not be as good as the Department of Forestry of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, not to mention supported by state funds, government input, and a team of experts with skills, why it is still “a global problem” for the Department of Forestry of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region?

Vietnam’s conservation experts tell us, that the rescue of pangolins is not a worldwide problem:

Save Vietnam’s Wildlife (SVW) is a rescue organization designated by IUCN to protect endangered wildlife such as pangolins. It was established in 2014. Its founder, Thai Nguyen Van, led his team and, with unremitting efforts, increased the success rate of pangolins by 80%! Since its establishment, the organization has accumulated a wealth of pangolins through its rich experience in pangolins rescue and rehabilitation techniques.

Since 2014, SVW has rescued more than 900 pangolins. In 2017 alone, there were more than 400. Since 2015, a total of more than 500 pangolins have been released in the wild. According to the physical condition of the pangolins arrived, the chance of survival is about 50%-90%. (Source: SVW)

The types of pangolins released by SVW are mainly Sunda pangolins (Manis javanica) and a few Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla). SVW made an invaluable contribution to restoring the number of pangolins in the wild. But as poachers are becoming more and more rampant, SVW is under pressure every year. At the same time, the data also shows that SVW is also working harder and stronger year after year and is more and more tenacious in the face of setbacks.

At present, due to the saturation of the facility space, SVW has also begun training other animal rescue centers at home and abroad and has unselfishly shared the experience and techniques of the rescuing pangolins for many years. For the future of pangolins, they are working hard. Threating wild animals is like treating their own children, silently caring and selfless dedication. This is the goal that everyone who is committed to wildlife rescue should follow. SVW uses its own actions to prove that as long as you are willing to do it and work hard, everything is possible.

In the meantime, veterinarians and professionals in the field of care all over the world will visit SVW to help guide them to protect wildlife more professionally. The global public will also come to Vietnam to help SVW through their expertise. Successful conservation is inseparable from a quality artificial environment. To reduce the pressure on wild animals and make them feel like they are living in nature, the rescue center needs a lot of manpower, material resources and financial resources to optimize the living conditions of animals.

Chinese pangolins used to be very common in our country. But now, they have disappeared in the wild. When foreign rescue organizations are trying to protect Chinese pangolins, what are we doing? What can we do for them?
