CBCGDF Urges Competent Authorities to Better Conserve Forest Frogs

On September 28, the CBCGDF sent official letters to the Heilongjiang Forestry Department and the Heilongjiang Forestry Industry General Administration respectively, urging them to take further measures to protect Forest frogs (Rana chensinensis) in Heilongjiang's mountainous areas.

Forest frogs play a key role in a healthy forestry ecosystem. In autumns, as the weather turning cold, the forest frogs living in the northeast forests went down the mountain, hoping to enter the mountain river to spend the winter. However, what the forest frogs didn't expect was that the journey of moving down the mountain was actually a road of NO RETURN: the miles-long artificial traps were set up and the giant dark pits showed an "extinction-style" killing. This story was widely reported by media, and the CBCGDF stepped in to investigate soon after.

Positive responses have been received from competent authorities, who promised to quickly conduct a comprehensive investigation, and well as to monitor illegal sales by shops and restaurants, plus to educate local people on wildlife conservation.

Praising the promise, the CBCGDF also believes that in order to ultimately solve the problem of over-exploitation of forest frogs, which are among China's Class#2 Protected Animals, we hope to cooperate with relevant forestry departments in the northeast Province in combating illegal catching and effectively promoting wildlife conversation.

Now the CBCGDF is working with local volunteers and communities, aiming to establish a Community Conservation Area for Forest Frogs (#CCAfa), to better aware the people, encourage the people, and empower the people.
