Recently, regarding the Pomacea canaliculate problem in Wenyu River, dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) organized a meeting to study and determine the five tasks of the Pomacea canaliculate ecological research group of the CBDGDF. It is currently proceeding in an orderly manner, and citizen scientists and experts in related fields are welcome to join.

First, determine the source. The three sources of Pomacea canaliculate eggs that have been preliminarily determined include illegal release, the spread of upstream and downstream water systems, and the introduction of aquatic plants from Gaobeidian. The CBCGDF research group will initiate a field survey, including sampling and appraisal in the upper and lower reaches of the Wenyu River and the Gaobeidian area. At present, the adult specimens from Wenyu River Wetland Park have been sent, waiting for the completion of the BGI (The Beijing Genomics Institute) test and a report.

Second, the survey on the surrounding areas of Beijing. Recently, netizens reported to CBCGDF Media that Pomacea canaliculate have appeared in many places in Beijing, such as Xiaoqing River in Fangshan District, Nangong Wetland in Daxing District, Huairou Reservoir in Huairou District, Shimen Market in Shunyi District, etc. The CBCGDF research group plans to go to the target areas, conduct field surveys, visits and take samples, obtain first-line data, and organize them.

Third, expand publicity. The CBCGDF research group determined the first formal research topic, which is the investigation of the source of the Pomacea canaliculate eggs in Wenyu River wetland park and the same location in Beijing. Here, it’s hoped to get the support of citizen scientists and professionals to promote research together. Strengthen popular science publicity and education, guide the public to pay attention to invasive alien species, and raise awareness of biodiversity conservation.

Fourth, a review of relevant literature. Search the various research results about Pomacea canaliculate in recent years, including Chinese and foreign documents, and extract and summarize them as the basis of the research work. In particular, as an invasive alien species, Pomacea canaliculate has impacts on agricultural production, spread in northern regions, and niche occupation.

Fifth, policy evaluation. In 2003, the State Environmental Protection Administration listed the Pomacea canaliculate as one of the 16 "most harmful alien species" that invaded China. Many southern provinces have adopted a series of measures to deal with its large-scale invasion. The CBCGDF research group collects relevant data and conducts research and evaluation.

Through the above five tasks, the CBCGDF research group hopes to finally complete the research project on the distribution of Pomacea canaliculate in Wenyu River, Beijing, North and even China. Scientifically assess the impact of invasive alien species on local biodiversity, as a typical case to support biodiversity conservation in China.
