Since 2009, China News Weekly has compiled an "Annual Influential Figures" list, which celebrates individuals who have made outstanding contributions in various fields while promoting rational values. This prestigious list encompasses domains such as rule of law, economy, culture, sports, technology, public welfare, and performing arts. While it may not capture every noteworthy figure, it serves as a testament to the collective power of influential individuals who can shape the tides of their time.

Among the esteemed personalities featured on this list is Jinfeng Zhou, who leads the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF). Zhou and the Beijing-based group have been recognized as the "Annual Public Welfare Figure" for their remarkable endeavors in the field.

Under Zhou's guidance, the CBCGDF has emerged as a leading force in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in China. The foundation's tireless efforts have brought attention to the urgent need for protecting and preserving the Earth's rich biological diversity. Zhou's vision extends beyond mere conservation; he advocates for a harmonious coexistence between human activities and the natural environment.

What makes Jinfeng Zhou's leadership truly remarkable is that none of the causes he spearheads are easy. Leading the CBCGDF, he has taken legal action against several polluting companies in China, including the well-known "Changzhou Poisoned Soil Case" in 2016. This case involved three chemical factories that contaminated the soil, resulting in hundreds of students and teachers in a local school falling ill. Another notable case was the "Tengger Desert Pollution" incident, where certain companies discharged untreated industrial wastewater into China's Tengger Desert, causing severe damage to the desert's ecosystem and groundwater. Zhou has also raised his voice for an endangered plant species, which exists only in a limited area within the Yajiang River basin in Sichuan. However, plans to construct a hydroelectric power station in that region posed a threat to its habitat. Leading over 100 such cases, each one presented numerous challenges and subjected the foundation to stigma and obstacles. Yet, the CBCGDF has never given up its efforts.

Through consistent efforts, strategic partnerships and innovative initiatives, Zhou has spearheaded numerous projects that promote ecological civilization and green development. From pioneering the concept of "ecological civilization" to advocating for sustainable practices in various sectors, his work has left an indelible mark on the environmental landscape of China.

The recognition of Jinfeng Zhou and the CBCGDF as one of the most influential figures of 2021 highlights the importance of biodiversity conservation and green development in the face of pressing global environmental challenges. Zhou's leadership and dedication serve as an inspiration to others, demonstrating the potential for individuals to make a significant impact on society and the environment.
