On July 29, 2022, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) released the "Preliminary Survey Report on Tiger Status in China". According to the data from it, there are about 7,116 tigers in China, including four subspecies: Siberian tigers, Bengal tigers, and South China tigers and Indochinese tigers.

The announcement was made at the release conference on the "Preliminary Report on the Tigers Status in China" held on World Tiger Day. The data is based on a preliminary survey on the distribution of tigers in various zoos, specialized breeding institutions, circuses and the wild in the past two years through data retrieval, telephone interviews, and field investigations, as well as preliminary statistics based on available data.

In terms of geographical distribution, 2,715 tigers are in zoos, 3,744 tigers in special breeding institutions such as Siberian Tiger Forest Park, Changchun Siberian Tiger Park, and Xionghu Mountain Villa, 584 tigers in 34 circuses with Tiger Breeding License in Suzhou, Anhui Province, and about 55 wild Siberian tigers in the Siberian Tiger and Leopard National Park, 14-20 Indochinese tigers in the wild in Yunnan.

According to the latest Red List update of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) released on July 21, 2022, there are only 3,726-5,578 tigers living in the wild in the world. Among the 7,116 tigers in China, only about 1%, or 73 tigers, live in the wild, while the vast majority are distributed in captive environments such as zoos, domestication and breeding bases, and circuses. Wild tigers in China only account for 1.9%-1.3% of the global distribution.
