"Father of the Chinese Diagonal Antelope" Ge Yuxiu: Dedicated to environmental protection and persistent in ecological photography

Ge Yuxiu, Director of the Chinese Diagonal Antelope (Qinghai) Reserve of the China Green Hair Association. In December 1970, he joined the army and went to Qinghai. During his 24 years in the military service, he has made meritorious service 3 times and received more than 20 awards.

In 1994, Ge Yuxiu transferred to Qinghai Branch of the People's Bank of China. He studied diligently and worked actively and conscientiously in his new job. 1.From photography enthusiasts to environmental protection volunteers

Ge Yuxiu became attached to environmental protection because his likes photography. He was the first person in China to photograph the Chinese diagonal antelope, filling the gap in the picture of this endangered species in the world, and since then embarked on the road of environmental protection volunteers.

Since 1995, Ge Yuxiu has used his spare time more than 240 times to visit Qinghai Lake 200 kilometers away from Xining, 25 times to Sanjiangyuan, 15 times to Hoh Xil. He fell into ice caves, encountered wild wolves and sank into marshes. He did not drink a sip of hot water or eat a bite of hot rice for 7 days and 7 nights. After all the hardships, He took more than 100,000 pictures of plateau wildlife and wrote a lot of articles reflecting the wildlife and living environment. There have been 160 articles with pictures and more than 1,500 (times) pictures, which have been published in more than 120 newspapers and magazines, including People's Daily, Xinhua Monthly, and China Photography News. The 121 photographs were used as the promotional film of "Great Beauty of Qinghai" to be shown on the big screen of Tiananmen Square.

2.Use practice to influence the public

In order to pass on the environmental protection concept to the public, Ge Yuxiu used his real-name Weibo on Sina, Netease, and Qinghai News to promote the protection of the source of the river and the protection of wild animals, with 2.3 million views.

Since 2002, Ge Yuxiu has brought courseware made by his own photographs, printed wild animal pictures with China Science Comunication texts at his own expense, and conducted more than 600 public welfare lectures on environmental protection in schools, enterprises, institutions, and pastoral tents, covering 26 locations. In provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government, lectures have more than 280,000 audiences, and more than 16,800 China Science Comunication pictures have been distributed.

In April 2017, Ge Yuxiu was invited to give a speech on the "Photographer Without Aggression" at the CC Forum, and won the CC Forum's 2017 "Popular Internet speaker” with 1.972 million video views.

At the beginning of 2020, during the abuse of the COVID-19, Ge Yuxiu used his own works to produce 12 beautiful articles. After the broadcast, it received widespread praise and achieved good social publicity effects. Among them, "Coronavirus Raises the Alarm Bell Again" and "Protecting Wild Animals and Creating a Harmonious Home Together" were affirmed by People's Daily Online as "Another Anti-epidemic" report.

In 2020, to meet the needs of the anti-epidemic situation, Ge Yuxiu gave 7 live public lectures while giving 9 lectures. Among them, in the "Great Journey" event organized by Xinhuanet on November 13, the 67-year-old played "I Tell You About Jiangyuan" live broadcast at the source of the Yangtze River at an altitude of 4,700 meters, and reached 425 views. On December 12, he was invited to face the open class "Focus on the Ecological Environment and Care for Wild Animals" conducted by libraries across the country. The audience from more than one hundred libraries watched the live broadcast, which was well received. 

3.From a volunteer who promotes ecological civilization to a model for leading social trends

Ge Yuxiu devoted his heart to conveying the green concept and writing eco-environmental protection with affection, which won the respect and support of the society. He was hired as an environmental professor by Beijing Normal University and Hong Kong Baptist University United International College, and as a visiting professor by Qingdao Vocational Education College and Qinghai Provincial Party School. "People's Daily", "China Environment News", "Financial Times", "China Art News", "Qinghai Daily" and other well-known media have successively reported on Ge Yuxiu's advanced deeds. Phoenix TV, CCN, and BBC have also made special reports on him.
