A letter to IUCN President Zhang Xinsheng, CBCGDF suggested that #BCON and #HBs should be included in the Marseille Outcome

Recently, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) received a letter from Zhang Xinsheng, President of the IUCN World Conservation Congress (IUCN WCC), saying that Congress Preparatory Committee (CPC) has put in place in order to provide the World Conservation Congress with a strong, focused and externally facing statement from the Union. IUCN current working title for this statement is the “Marseille Outcomes”.  The purpose of the Marseille Outcomes is to capture a limited number of key messages that are globally and currently relevant, and which relate to the Congress proceedings along with any notable and important commitments and announcements that may emerge from Congress events.

The CPC therefore convened a small task force to help guide the preparatory process.  That task force has consulted with Congress event organisers and has developed four relevant and topical themes around which the Marseille Outcome messages can be built. These are:

i) The importance of partnerships, collaboration and agency of all stakeholders in addressing the key global challenges we are currently facing.  This message goes to the heart of what the Union is;

ii) Post-COVID Nature-based recovery with a focus on the role of conservation and natural resources in addressing medium to long-term consequences of the social and economic impacts;

iii) Post-2020 agenda and the biodiversity crisis channelling the broader conservation communities voice into the sort of ambition required from CBD COP15;

iv) The climate emergency. Key messages for the Glasgow COP on the links between the climate and biodiversity crises.

In this, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng responded as follows:

Dear President Zhang,

Thanks for your email!

 We have read the Marseille Outcomes, which outlines a promising approach to secure a brighter future for all life on earth.

On behalf of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), a member of IUCN, here are our suggestions on Marseille Outcomes.

We suggest write Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON) and Human-based Solution (HbS) into Marseille Outcomes to promote positive local interactions with biodiversity.

 BCON and HbS stress people’s participation, and by making people appreciate biodiversity, they can be part of the solution.

1.Human-based Solution (HbS) means that each of us can participate in the process of resolving the current crisis, and the efforts of each of us can constitute a crucial component of these challenges.

People are the root of all problems. Human consumption and unsustainable use are the main drivers of biodiversity loss. Therefore, real environmental solutions should follow the "people-oriented" and human-based thinking, and this thinking is the foundation of protecting nature and sustainable development.

2.Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood aims to promote effective conservation of biodiversity in areas where human activities are intensive, to balance conservation and development, to synergise sustainable livelihoods and biodiversity conservation.

Conservation of biodiversity requires innovative thinking. Due to the expansion of human living area, it is of great importance to learn how to effectively carry out biodiversity conservation in populated areas.

Furthermore, by engaging people with biodiversity, we can empower them to act, and educate them on how, and thus better navigate a more sustainable future together.

Thanks for your email again.

We are looking forward to hearing from you.
